NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University men's volleyball team suffered a non-conference loss to York College, 3-1, at the Max Stern Athletic Center on Sunday afternoon. Set scores were 27-25, 19-25, 13-25, and 13-25.
Junior outside hitter
Chaim Aryeh Rubin led the way for the Macs, slamming home 10 kills and anchoring the defense with nine digs. Sophomore middle blocker
Yosef Ajami had a team-high 10 digs to go along with a kill, a block, and an ace. Freshman setter
Isaac Pomerance produced 16 assists with two service aces, while junior outside hitter
Amitai Miller had seven digs and three kills. Freshman outside hitter
Jonathan Apsan had four kills, two blocks, and an ace. Junior libero
Gavriel Hizami slammed home a kill with four digs, while sophomore middle blocker
Joshua Rosenberg added three kills with six digs.
YU (1-5) fell behind 21-15 in the opening set, but answered with a 7-2 run to pull to within one. Highlighted in that run were a service ace by Pomerance and a kill by Rosenberg. York (2-10) answered, thanks to a kill by Akeem George to give the Cardinals a set-point opportunity. Yeshiva scored the next two points, capped off by Miller's kill, to even the opening set at 24-24. After York gained another set-point opportunity, Yeshiva scored again to avoid defeat. With the match tied at 25-25, Apsan scored an ace and Pomerance slammed home a kill to clinch the comeback win for Yeshiva in the first game, 27-25.
In the second game, Rubin's kill and Pomerance's service ace highlighted a 6-0 run by Yeshiva to put the home team up, 14-8. However, York was able to turn the tide into its favor by going on a 13-1 run to take a 21-15 lead. Yeshiva answered with three straight to pull closer, but the Cardinals followed by scoring four of the game's last five points to win the second set, 25-19, and tie the match at 1-1.
The Cardinals momentum carried into the third and fourth sets, winning both games in convincing fashion, to earn the non-conference win.
Yeshiva will play at Brooklyn College on Tuesday. First serve is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
