PALISADES, N.J. – The Yeshiva University baseball team dropped both games of its Skyline Conference double-header to Mount Saint Vincent, at Palisades Park, on Sunday afternoon. YU fell in the first game, 13-5, and dropped the second contest by a score of 14-0.
In the opening contest, the Dolphins (6-5, 2-0 Skyline) scored six runs over the first four innings to take a 6-0 advantage. Yeshiva (0-6, 0-4 Skyline) was able to get one run back in the fourth, as an RBI single by junior left fielder
Aryeh Salovey scored senior shortstop
Shmuli Goldis from third.
Senior first baseman
Chaim Nosson Rosenberg led off the bottom of the fifth with a single to left field. Up next, sophomore second baseman
Zachary Baly swung at a pitch on 0-2 and scorched it to right center field for an RBI triple. Scoring on the play, all the way from first, was Rosenberg as Yeshiva narrowed its deficit to 6-2. Two batters later, junior starting pitcher
Josh Fogel helped his cause by lining a single to center, scoring Baly to pull the Maccabees to within three.
Mount Saint Vincent answered in the next half inning, as a two-run triple by Justin Varvaro put a cap on a four-running inning to give the Dolphins a commanding 10-3 advantage. YU added two runs in the home half of the sixth, but Mount Saint Vincent pulled away again with three runs over the final two inning to win the game, 13-5.
For the game, sophomore center fielder
David Hanelin and Salovey each went 2-for-4, with the latter stealing a base and producing an RBI. Rosenberg scored two runs, while Goldis singled, walked, and scored a run of his own. Baly drove in two runs, while senior right fielder
Mordechai Cohen drew a walk.
On the mound, Sean McHugh picked up the win for Mount Saint Vincent, striking out seven batters in six innings pitched. Fogel also completed six innings as a starter, but was credited with the loss.
In game two, Mount Saint Vincent scored three runs in the third, just as many in the fourth, and five runs in the fifth to take the lead for good. The Dolphins scored three runs in the seventh to cap off the convincing win, 14-0.
Yeshiva committed seven errors on the field, which turned out to be the difference. Freshman pitcher
Sonny Braha started the game for the Maccabees, and gave up just one earned run in four innings pitched to take the loss. He struck out three batters in just the second start of his collegiate career. Jeremy Glazer earned a complete game victory for the Dolphins, striking out ten YU batters without giving up a walk in seven shutout innings pitched.
Six Yeshiva batters earned a hit, including a double by sophomore catcher
Jordan Shafron. In his only plate appearance of the afternoon, sophomore third baseman
Alex Malech reached base with a single, while Goldis went 1-for-2. Hanelin picked up yet another hit, while Rosenberg produced a single of his own. Baly also picked up a base hit.
The Maccabees will be back in action on Tuesday, for a Skyline Conference double-header against Purchase College. The game will be played on the Panthers' campus in Westchester, but Yeshiva will be the official home team for both games. First pitch of the twin-bill is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
