Softball Team Sets Program Single-Game Scoring Record in Win Over York College (N.Y.)

BELLEROSE, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University softball team earned an historic win on Sunday afternoon, defeating York College (N.Y.) by a score of 26-15, at Padavan-Preller Field. The Maccabees set a program single-game record for runs scored in a game.  The previous record was 25 runs scored in a victory over Valley Forge, just last season.

Danielle DeStaso earned her first collegiate victory as head coach. "Today's game shows how much we are learning everyday, as well as our ability to take mistakes from the past and build on them in the future," DeStaso said. "We are starting to gain more confidence in our hitting, and our players in the field are learning to work together and make plays."

Yeshiva (1-2) loaded the bases in the top of the first with nobody out. Senior designated player Elisa Alweis drew a walk to score senior center fielder Ellie Chase, to put YU on the board. Two batters later, freshman shortstop Basya Goldstein drilled a single to score junior right fielder Leah Feder and freshman second baseman Chana Boltax to extend YU's lead to 3-0.

York (0-3) responded by scoring eight runs in the home half of the first to take a commanding lead. In the top of the second, the Cardinals retired the first two Macs' batters, but YU was then able to load the bases. Goldstein was patient at the plate and drew a walk. The next hitter was sophomore first baseman Gabi Chutter, who drove in two runs to pull the Macs to within two. Yeshiva added one more run to complete the two-out rally.

After York extended its lead to 9-7, Yeshiva's lineup was able to break out with eight runs in the third inning. Feder drew a walk with the bases loaded, while junior catcher Sarah Hiller produced an RBI single to tie the game. Once again, Goldstein picked up an RBI, by drawing a walk with the bases loaded, to put Yeshiva in the lead, 10-9. The big blow in the inning came off the bat of Chutter, as she drilled a bases-clearing double to give the Maccabees a 13-9 advantage. The Macs scored two more runs in the frame to go up, 15-9.

Yeshiva continued its strong hitting by scoring 11 runs in the fifth inning. The key play of the frame was a triple by Chase with the bases loaded, which scored three runs, to give the Blue and White a commanding 26-12 lead. During that inning, Boltax drove in two runs with a double, while Hiller produced an RBI single.

YU went on to earn the win, 26-15.

Junior pitcher Samantha Cohen earned her first victory of the season, while Alweis struck out two batters in one inning of relief.

For the game, Goldstein went 2-for-2, scored four runs, drove in just as many, worked three walks, and stole two bases. Chase, Hiller, and Boltax each went 2-for-4 with three runs scored. Feder scored four runs, drew three walks, and drove in a run batted in. Chutter produced a team-high five RBI, while Alweis scored two runs, drew two walks, and had an RBI of her own. Freshman left fielder Tehilla Teigman scored three runs and stole two bases, while first-year third baseman Chana Weinberg scored two runs, drew two walks, had a hit, and a run batted in.

Yeshiva will return to the friendly confines of Fordham University on Monday, for a non-conference double-header against John Jay College. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
