BRONX, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University softball team dropped both ends of its non-conference double-header to John Jay College, at Murphy Field on the campus of Fordham University, on Monday evening. Yeshiva fell in game one, 12-3, while dropping the second contest by a score of 24-11.
John Jay (2-2) scored four runs in the top of the first inning of the opening game. In the home half of the first, senior center fielder
Ellie Chase drilled a lead-off triple to left center field. She would eventually score on an RBI double by freshman shortstop
Basya Goldstein to pull the Macs (1-4) to within three.
The Bloodhounds would build its lead up to 12-1. With Yeshiva at the plate in the bottom of the fifth, junior catcher
Sarah Hiller and sophomore third baseman
Gabi Chutter each produced an RBI single to pull Yeshiva closer. It would not be enough, as John Jay went on to earn the win in the opening game, 12-3.
For the contest, Chase went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Freshman second baseman
Chana Boltax went 1-for 3 with a run scored, while senior first baseman
Elisa Alweis had a single and drew a walk. Freshman left fielder
Tehilla Teigman also picked up a hit, while classmate
Malky Perlberger drew a walk. In the circle, junior
Samantha Cohen pitched a complete game with five strikeouts. For John Jay, Lisa Pellegrino struck out nine YU batters to earn the complete-game victory.
The Bloodhounds once again struck early in game two, scoring eight runs during the first two innings to take a commanding lead. Yeshiva got one back in the bottom of the second by producing a two-out rally. Teigman drilled a triple down the right field line. She would come around to score on an RBI single by Alweis.
Goldstein led off the fourth inning with a triple to right center. She would eventually score on a wild pitch. Later in the frame, Alweis drove in two runs on a single to narrow the Maccabees' deficit to 14-4. Perlberger produced an RBI single for Yeshiva's fifth run.
The Blue and White would rally in the home half of the fifth, to narrow John Jay's lead to 15-10. The Bloodhounds committed five errors in the frame, which led to five Yeshiva runs.
John Jay responded by scoring nine runs in the top of the sixth to earn more breathing room. In the bottom frame, Chutter drilled an RBI single for YU's 11
th run, but it would not be enough as John Jay went on to earn the win, 24-11.
For the second game, Chutter went 3-for-3 with a run scored and a run batted in. Alweis went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three runs batted in. Senior first baseman
Batya Schreier and Teigman each went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Goldstein also scored twice. Perlberger went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a run batted in, while Chase scored a run of her own.
In the circle, Alweis pitched a complete game. For John Jay, AnneMarie River went the distance as the starting pitcher, striking out seven Yeshiva hitters to earn the win.
Yeshiva will open up Skyline play on Wednesday, against Mount Saint Vincent in a double-header at Fordham University, beginning at 6:00 p.m.
