NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University men's volleyball team concluded the home portion of its schedule with a non-conference loss to the College of Staten Island, 3-0, at the Max Stern Athletic Center on Sunday afternoon. Set scores were 25-9, 25-16, and 25-17.
The Dolphins (5-12) cruised to a victory in the first set. The Maccabees (3-14) got off to a strong start in the second game, as back-to-back kills by freshman outside hitter
Jonathan Apsan and sophomore opposite hitter
Derek Orenshein propelled YU to a 6-1 advantage. After CSI pulled to within one, Orenshein produced another kill to increase the Macs' lead. The Dolphins countered by scoring five of the next six points to jump out in front. Yeshiva could not generate a run for the remainder of the set, as CSI scored five unanswered points to win the frame, 25-16, and go up 2-0 in the match.
CSI jumped out to a commanding 18-9 lead in the third game. Later in the stanza, junior outside hitter
Chaim Aryeh Rubin slammed home three kills during YU's 6-3 run that pulled the home team to within seven, at 23-16. It would not be enough as CSI went on to win the third game, 25-17, and earn the non-conference victory.
For the match, freshman setter
Isaac Pomerance produced a double-double with 15 assists and 12 digs, which were both team highs. Rubin anchored the defense with 10 digs, one block, and added four kills on the attack. Orenshein had a team-high five kills to go along with seven digs and three assists, while freshman outside hitter
Joseph Sulaymanov had three kills and five digs. Freshman defensive specialist
Ariel Boutehsaz produced eight digs, while sophomore middle blocker
Yosef Ajami slammed home three kills and scored a service ace. Junior outside hitter
Amitai Miller added an assist.
It was senior day and graduating senior
David Fattakhov was honored with a ceremony prior to the start of the match. During the contest, he slammed home one kill in the final home match of his collegiate career.
Yeshiva will be back in action on Tuesday, for a non-conference match at Bard College, beginning at 8:30 p.m.
