BRONX, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University softball team dropped both ends of its non-conference double-header to Baruch College (9-0, 21-9) at Fordham University on Tuesday evening. Yeshiva falls to 1-8, while Baruch advances to 4-4.
In the opening game, the Bearcats scored three runs in the second, and five runs in the fifth, to earn the victory. Cassandra Lagana earned a complete-game shutout victory in the circle, giving up just two hits and striking out nine Yeshiva batters. Junior pitcher
Samantha Cohen pitched a complete-game, giving up just two earned runs in five innings pitched. At the plate, freshman left fielder
Tehilla Teigman produced a double in her only plate appearance, while shortstop
Basya Goldstein went 1-for-2 with a single.
In the second game, Baruch scored five runs in the opening inning. Yeshiva got two of those runs back in the bottom frame. Sophomore third baseman
Gabi Chutter drilled a triple to right center field to score Teigman. Chutter would eventually score on an RBI single by freshman designated player
Malky Perlberger, to pull the Maccabees to within three.
After Baruch scored five more runs in the second inning, Teigman drilled a triple to left center, scoring Goldstein and senior center fielder
Ellie Chase, to narrow the deficit to 10-4. However, Baruch built its lead up to 19-4, thanks to an eight-run third inning. In the bottom of the fourth, Perlberger scored on an RBI double by senior first baseman
Batya Schreier, for Yeshiva's sixth run of the game. In the home half of the fifth, Goldstein drove in two more runs on a double. It would not be enough, as Baruch won the second game, 21-9, to earn the sweep.
In the circle, Victoria Kisling earned a complete-game victory. Senior pitcher
Elisa Alweis also pitched a complete-game, but took the loss.
At the plate, the Maccabees produced 11 hits in the second game. Goldstein went 2-for-3 with three runs batted in and two runs scored. Teigman went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Junior catcher
Sarah Hiller drilled two doubles, in three at-bats, and scored a run. Chutter drove in two runs, while Perlberger scored a run and drew a walk. Chase went 1-for-2 with two runs scored, while Alweis reached base twice.
Yeshiva will return from the break on Monday, April 9, with a Skyline Conference double-header against Farmingdale State at Murphy Field. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
