Men's Volleyball Defeats Sarah Lawrence to Clinch Berth in Skyline Championships

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University men's volleyball team closed out the regular season with a key Skyline Conference win over Sarah Lawrence College, 3-0, at the Campbell Sports Center on Tuesday evening. Thanks to the victory, Yeshiva has clinched a spot in the upcoming Skyline Conference Championships. This will be the Maccabees' first appearance in the Skyline postseason since 2010.

"The guys played like a true team today," Yeshiva University Head Coach Dalliana Toussaint said. "The fight, the energy, and the heart were all there tonight. Coach Tyce (Dagel) and I are so proud of them."

Set scores were 25-20, 25-21, and 25-17.

In the opening set, back-to-back kills by freshman setter Isaac Pomerance and junior outside hitter Chaim Aryeh Rubin propelled Yeshiva (4-15, 3-7 Skyline) to a 7-1 run to give the Macs a 16-12 lead. After Sarah Lawrence (0-23, 0-10 Skyline) inched closer, freshman outside hitter Jonathan Apsan tallied back-to-back kills to extend Yeshiva's advantage to 19-15. Later in the set, the Gryphons managed to pull to within three, at 23-20. However, Yeshiva scored the final two points to clinch the first set, 25-20.

In the second set, Sarah Lawrence went on an 8-2 run to tie the stanza, 18-18. After the Maccabees regained the lead, Rubin's service ace extended the Macs' advantage to 20-18. The Gryphons countered with three straight points to go up, 21-20. The Maccabees regained their composure and scored five unanswered points, capped off by a kill from sophomore opposite hitter Derek Orenshein, to take the second set, by a score of 25-21, and put the Gryphons on the brink.

In the third set, Pomerance and sophomore middle blocker Yosef Ajami combined for back-to-back kills to spark a 6-0 run for Yeshiva that put the visiting team up, 10-5. Later in the set, Pomerance scored back-to-back service aces to cap off four answered points for YU and increase its lead to 16-10. The Gryphons were able to narrow the deficit to 18-16. From that point on, it was all Yeshiva, as the Maccabees scored six of the game's next seven points to earn a set-point opportunity, at 24-17. Yeshiva wasted little time as a kill by senior middle blocker David Fattakhov clinched the match and a playoff spot for the Maccabees.

For the evening, Rubin slammed home seven kills and chipped in on defense with just as many digs. Apsan and Orenshein each had four kills. The latter tied a match-high with nine digs to go along with a pair of service aces, and the former produced four digs. Ajami also had nine digs to go along with three kills, while Pomerance led all players with 15 assists, had a team-high three service aces, added three kills, and recorded four digs. Freshman outside hitter Joseph Sulaymanov produced three kills and junior outside hitter Amitai Miller added five digs with a pair of service aces. Fattakhov produced two digs.
