BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University softball team dropped both ends of its non-conference double-header to Brooklyn College (11-4, 12-4), at Brooklyn College Field, on Tuesday evening.
In game one, the Bulldogs (3-13) scored seven runs in the opening inning and never looked back. In the top of the sixth, freshman shortstop
Basya Goldstein produced an RBI single to score junior right fielder
Leah Feder to narrow Brooklyn's lead to 10-4. It would not be enough, as the Bulldogs went on to earn the win.
For the contest, junior catcher
Sarah Hiller and sophomore third baseman
Gabi Chutter each went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Freshman second baseman
Chana Boltax drilled a double, stole a base, and scored a run, while freshman first baseman
Yael Itskowitz picked up a run batted in. Senior center fielder
Ellie Chase drew a walk.
In the circle, senior pitcher
Elisa Alweis struck out four batters to pitch a complete game, but took the loss. Uena Xharo struck out ten batters in seven innings for the complete-game victory.
The Maccabees (1-12) struck first in game two, as an RBI single by Chutter scored Goldstein from second, to give Yeshiva a 1-0 lead in the opening inning.
After Brooklyn jumped out to a 2-1 lead, Yeshiva responded with three runs in the fourth. During the frame, Yeshiva had runners on first and second with one out. Feder launched a double to score Itskowitz and freshman designated player
Courtney Marks to allow YU to regain the lead, 3-2. Two batters later, Feder ended up scoring on an RBI double by Goldstein to extend the Maccabees' lead to 4-2. In the bottom frame, junior pitcher
Samantha Cohen continued Yeshiva's momentum by pitching a one-two-three inning.
In the bottom of the fifth, Brooklyn had the bases loaded with one out. Daminska Estime drew a walk to score Jessenia Garate, to cut YU's lead to one run. Two batters later, Viviana Torres singled to score Breanna Maresca to tie the game, 4-4.
Brooklyn's lineup exploded in the bottom of the sixth, scoring eight runs to not only take a commanding lead, but clinch the win. An RBI single by Maresca officially ended the game.
For the second end of the double-header, Xharo struck out six batters to earn her second complete-game victory of the afternoon. Cohen pitched 5.2 innings, but was handed the loss. Hiller and freshman designated player
Malky Perlberger each went 1-for-3, while classmate
Tehilla Teigman reached base with a single.
Yeshiva will be back in action on Friday, for a Skyline Conference double-header at Purchase College. First pitch of the opening game is scheduled for 10:00 a.m.
