Softball Team's Lineup Has Productive Afternoon But Drops Two Skyline Games to Purchase College

PURCHASE, N.Y.  – The Yeshiva University softball team dropped both ends of its Skyline Conference double-header to Purchase College (14-5, 13-5), at the Purchase College Softball Field, on Friday afternoon. Yeshiva drops to 1-14 (0-6 Skyline), while Purchase advances to 5-9 (3-5 Skyline).

The Maccabees got off to a strong start in game one. In the opening inning, with runners on first and second and nobody out, junior catcher Sarah Hiller launched a double to right-center field, allowing freshman shortstop Basya Goldstein and senior center fielder Ellie Chase to score, putting Yeshiva up by a score of 2-0. After Hiller advanced to third on sophomore third baseman Gabi Chutter's fly out to right, she scored on an RBI groundout by freshman designated player Malky Perlberger to extend the visiting team's lead to 3-0.

The Panthers countered with five runs in the bottom frame to take a two-run lead. Purchase put up a seven-spot in the third to go up, 14-4. Yeshiva did get a run back in the top of the fifth, thanks to an RBI single by Chutter. It would not be enough, as Purchase went on to win the first game, 14-5.

For the game, Hiller went 2-for-2 and drew a walk, while Chutter went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Goldstein and Chase each produced a single, with the latter scoring two runs and drawing a walk. Freshman second baseman Chana Boltax reached base with a single.

In the circle, junior pitcher Samantha Cohen pitched a complete game, but took the loss. Kelly Agostini earned a complete-game win for the Panthers.

Yeshiva got off to a strong start in game two, as an RBI double by Chutter scored Hiller to put the Macs up, 1-0. Chutter would come around and score thanks to an error by the shortstop, extending Yeshiva's lead to 2-0.

The Panthers answered in the bottom frame, by scoring four runs to jump out in front. In the top of the second, Yeshiva played small ball. Senior first baseman Batya Schreier led off the inning with a single to right-center field. She advanced to second on a groundout and eventually stole third. Schreier would eventually score on an RBI groundout by junior right fielder Leah Feder, to pull the Maccabees to within one.

Purchase scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth to increase the lead to 9-3. Yeshiva got two of those runs back in the next half inning, as Chutter drove in both runs on a single to score Feder and Goldstein.

The Panthers lineup continued to produce in the bottom of the fifth, scoring four runs to clinch the win, 13-5.

For the game, Chutter went 2-for-3 with three runs batted in and one run scored. Hiller drew a walk and scored a run, while junior designated player Sarah Elspas and Feder each reached base via a walk. In the circle, Agostini once again earned a complete-game victory. Senior pitcher Elisa Alweis went 4.2 innings and took the loss.

Yeshiva will travel to Sarah Lawrence College on Sunday, for a Skyline Conference double-header against the Gryphons. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
