Baseball Team's Game Two Rally Not Enough as John Jay Wins Both Ends of Doubleheader

RIDGEFIELD PARK, N.J. – The Yeshiva University baseball team suffered a pair of non-conference losses to John Jay College, at Overpeck Park, on Tuesday evening. The Maccabees dropped game one, 25-4, and lost the second game by just one run, 5-4.

In the second end of the doubleheader, John Jay (10-13) scored three runs in the third inning on its way to building a 5-0 advantage. Yeshiva (3-16) got two of those runs back in the bottom of the fourth, highlighted by a sacrifice fly off the bat of sophomore third baseman Alex Malech.

Yeshiva pulled even closer in the bottom of the fifth. With one run already in, the Maccabees loaded the bases with two outs. Sophomore catcher Jordan Shafron was patient at the plate, earning a four-pitch walk to score senior pitcher Mordechai Cohen to narrow John Jay's lead to 5-4. With the bases loaded, including the game-tying and game-winning runs in scoring position, the Bloodhounds were able to produce a groundout to escape with the win.

For the game, senior shortstop Shmuli Goldis had a single and reached base twice. Sophomore second baseman Zachary Baly earned a one-base hit, drew a walk, and scored a run. Senior first baseman Chaim Nosson Rosenberg and sophomore center fielder David Hanelin each drew a walk and scored a run, while sophomore right fielder Sonny Braha and Cohen each reached via base-on-balls.

On the mound, Cohen struck out six batters in five innings to take the loss. For John Jay, Brian Garcia gave up one earned run and struck out four batters in four innings to earn the win. Dylan Locke notched his first save of the year.

Earlier in the day, the Bloodhounds dominated the opening game. Jurrel Diaz drilled a solo home run to right, giving the Bloodhounds a 3-0 lead in the first inning. John Jay's power surge continued in the fourth inning, as Robert Moncino lined a two-run homer to right center, extending the Bloodhounds' lead to 11-3.

The bulk of Yeshiva's production came in the third inning. With runners on first and second, one out, Goldis poked a single to left, scoring both junior left fielder Aryeh Salovey and Malech to put the Maccabees on the board. After Goldis stole second, he ended up scoring on an RBI double to right center off the bat of Rosenberg for Yeshiva's third run.

It would not be enough, as the Bloodhounds scored ten runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach for the Maccabees. John Jay went on to earn the win, 25-4.

For the game, Salovey went 2-for-3 with a stolen base. Hanelin produced a single, while Goldis, Rosenberg, and Cohen each picked up a walk. Malech and freshman pitcher Shmuel Silverstein each stole a base, with the former scoring a pair of runs. Sophomore left fielder Aaron Vilinsky produced his first collegiate hit, while sophomore right fielder Joseph Goffstein earned his first collegiate walk.

On the mound, Jared Hershfield earned the win by striking out seven YU batters in five innings pitch. Nick Jack pitched two shutout innings of relief. Braha took the loss on the mound, while sophomore pitcher Josh Fogel did not give up an earned run in 1.1 innings of relief.

Yeshiva will host St. Joseph's College Brooklyn, in a Skyline Conference doubleheader at Overpeck Park, on Friday at 9:30 a.m. It will be Senior Day as Goldis and Rosenberg will be honored with a ceremony prior to the start of the opening game.
