BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University baseball team suffered a pair of Skyline Conference losses to St. Joseph's College Brooklyn (21-2 and 9-3), at Calvert Vaux Park, on Friday afternoon.
In game one, the Bears (5-24, 3-9 Skyline) scored six runs in the first two innings to take a commanding lead. Yeshiva (3-18, 0-14 Skyline) got two of those runs back in the home half of the second, highlighted by an RBI single off the bat of sophomore third baseman
Alex Malech. YU could not generate any more runs, as St. Joseph's earned the convening win in the first end of the twin-bill.
For the game, sophomore catcher
Jordan Shafron picked up an RBI and drew a walk. Senior right fielder
Mordechai Cohen went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while sophomore shortstop
Zachary Baly scored one run and had a single. Malech had two hits in three at-bats, with one stolen base, while junior left fielder
Aryeh Salovey lined a triple and stole a base of his own. Senior first baseman
Chaim Nosson Rosenberg, and sophomore third baseman
Mordy Kirsch reached base on a walk. First-year second baseman
Shmuel Silverstein produced a single.
On the mound, C.J. Bunnicelli earned a complete-game victory, giving up just one earned run and striking out 10 YU batters. Sophomore pitcher
David Hanelin took the loss for the Maccabees.
In game two, the Bears scored six runs in the second inning to take a commanding 7-0 advantage. In the bottom of the fourth, Salovey and Hanelin combined for back-to-back RBI singles to pull the Maccabees to within five.
St. Joseph's scored two runs in the sixth to regain its seven-run cushion. In the bottom frame, Silverstein hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Baly. That would be all the Maccabees would get, as the Bears earned the sweep.
For the game, Salovey went 2-for-4 with a stolen base. Sophomore right fielder
Joseph Goffstein produced a single, while Kirsch walked twice and scored a run. Hanelin drew a walk and stole a base, while Cohen and Malech each reached base via a walk. Shafron earned a base on balls and scored a run. Baly reached base with a single. Silverstein picked up a pair of walks and drove in a run.
On the mound, Matthew Rienzi pitched two shutout innings out of the bullpen to earn the win, while Salovey started the game and took the loss. Malech gave up just one earned run, while string out six batters, in 5.2 innings pitched in relief.
Yeshiva will travel to Long Island on Sunday for a Skyline Conference doubleheader at the College at Old Westbury. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
