OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University baseball team dropped both ends of it Skyline Conference doubleheader to the College at Old Westbury (13-1, 15-2), at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Center, on Sunday afternoon.
The Panthers (17-13-1, 9-5-0 Skyline) scored five runs in the opening inning of the first game to take a commanding lead. After Old Westbury added a pair of runs in the bottom of the third, Yeshiva was able to score its lone run in the fourth. In that frame, senior right fielder
Mordechai Cohen drilled a double, with one out. Sophomore designated hitter
Sonny Braha drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Two batters later, with two outs, sophomore shortstop
Zachary Baly produced an RBI single to right-center field, scoring Cohen to pull the Macs to within six.
It would not be enough, as the Panthers scored four more runs in the bottom frame to increase their lead, and would go on to earn the convincing game one victory.
For the game, junior left fielder
Aryeh Salovey produced a double. Sophomore center fielder
David Hanelin went 2-for-3, while second-year catcher
Jordan Shafron and sophomore second baseman
Shmuel Silverstein each earned a base on balls.
On the mound, John Hill struck out four YU batters, and gave up just one earned run in five innings pitched, to earn the win. C.J. Pasqueralli struck out three Yeshiva hitters in two shutout innings out of the bullpen. Freshman pitcher
Yosef Rosenfield pitched a complete game, but took the loss.
In game two, the Panthers scored 12 runs over the course of the first two innings to put the game out of reach for YU. In the top of the third, Shafron doubled to left center to score sophomore third baseman
Mordy Kirsch from first, to put the Maccabees on the board. Yeshiva got another run in the top of the fourth, off a sacrifice fly by senior first baseman
Chaim Nosson Rosenberg. Old Westbury went on to earn the win, 15-2.
During the second game, sophomore shortstop
Alex Malech produced a single and drew a walk. Hanelin picked up another hit in his only plate appearance, while junior pitcher
Josh Fogel reached base with a triple and scored a run. Kirsch lined a single, while Rosenberg produced an RBI.
On the mound, Vinny Trovato earned the win, giving up just two earned runs in five innings pitched, while striking out six Yeshiva hitters. William Amendola struck out three YU batters in two shutout innings of relief. For the Maccabees, Cohen started the game and took the loss. Fogel pitched 4.1 innings out of the bullpen.
Yeshiva will be back in action on Wednesday, for a non-conference double-header against New York University, on Coney Island. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
