Softball Team Suffers Pair of Hard-Fought Losses to Valley Forge

PHOENIXVILLE, Pa. – The Yeshiva University softball team dropped both ends of its non-conference double-header to the University of Valley Forge (16-8 and 10-2), out in Pennsylvania, on Tuesday evening. The Maccabees fall to 1-18, while the Patriots advance to 7-17.

In game one, The Maccabees got off to a good start, scoring two runs in the top of the first to take the early lead. After the Patriots scored a run in the bottom frame, Yeshiva answered with three runs in the top of the second, thanks to an RBI single by freshman shortstop Basya Goldstein and a two-run double by sophomore third baseman Gabi Chutter, to extend the Macs' lead to 5-1.

Valley Forge's lineup broke out with five runs in the bottom of the second to take its first lead of the game, 6-5.

Yeshiva would have another big inning in the third. With the bases loaded and one out, freshman left fielder Tehilla Teigman singled up the middle to score freshman first baseman Yael Itskowitz to tie it up. Goldstein followed with a single through the left side, scoring freshman designated player Malky Perlberger to allow YU to regain the lead, 7-6. Senior center fielder Ellie Chase picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice to score freshman second baseman Chana Boltax and extended the Macs' lead to 8-6.

From that point on, Patriots' pitcher Lindsay LeSueur would settle in and shut down Yeshiva for the final two frames. The Patriots' lineup would not letup, scoring two runs in the third and four runs each in the fourth and fifth to earn the come-from-behind win, 16-8.

For the game, Goldstein went a perfect 4-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, and just as many runs batted in. Boltax and Teigman each went 2-for-3, with the former scoring a pair of runs and the latter producing a double. Perlberger drew a walk, while Itskowitz produced a hit and stole two bases. Junior catcher Sarah Hiller added a run batted in, while Chase scored a run.

In the circle, LeSueur picked up a complete-game victory. Junior pitcher Samantha Cohen pitched four-plus innings to take the loss.

The Maccabees got off to another good start in the second game, taking a 1-0 advantage into the bottom of the first. However, the Patriots scored twice to take the lead. In the top of the second, with a runner on third and two outs, Chase lined a double to center, scoring Perlberger and tying the game, 2-2.

Valley Forge took over from that point on, scoring two runs in the bottom of the second, one in the fourth, two in the fifth, and three in the sixth to earn a 10-2 win.

For the game, Chase went 2-for-2.  Teigman produced a triple and scored a run. Hiller had a hit and scored a run, while Perlberger produced a single of her own. Senior pitcher Elisa Alweis also produced a single, while Goldstein picked up a stolen base.

In the circle, Alweis went five innings to take the loss. For the Patriots, LeSueur earned her second complete-game victory of the afternoon.

The Maccabees will be back in action on Sunday afternoon, with a Skyline Conference double-header at St. Joseph's Long Island, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
