PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University softball team dropped a pair of Skyline Conference games to St. Joseph's Long Island (14-0, 13-2), at the SJC Softball Stadium, on Sunday afternoon.
Freshman shortstop
Basya Goldstein and senior center fielder
Ellie Chase combined for back-to-back hits to lead off the opening game. That would be all the Maccabees (1-20, 0-10 Skyline) would get, as YU was held hitless for the rest of the game. After scoring a pair of runs in the first, the Golden Eagles (14-6, 10-0 Skyline) exploded for 11 runs in the third inning to put the game out of reach.
For the game, Theresa Cardello earned the shutout victory by striking out five YU batters in five innings pitched. Junior pitcher
Samantha Cohen started the game and took the loss.
In game two, the Golden Eagles scored eight runs over the course of the first two innings to take the lead. Yeshiva got two of those runs back in the top of the third, highlighted by a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior catcher
Sarah Hiller. It would not be enough, as St. Joseph's Long Island put up two runs in the bottom frame, and added three more in the fourth, to earn the sweep.
For the game, senior right fielder
Batya Schreier went 1-for-2, while Cohen produced a single in a pinch-hit appearance at the plate. Goldstein and freshman first baseman
Yael Itskowitz scored one run each.
In the circle, senior pitcher
Elisa Alweis pitched a complete game, but took the loss. Ashley Blydenburgh gave up no earned runs and struck out seven YU batters to earn the complete-game victory.
Yeshiva will host the College at Old Westbury, in a Skyline Conference double-header at Fordham University, on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
