NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University men's tennis team will begin its quest for a fifth straight Skyline championship and automatic bid into the NCAA tournament, as the No. 1 Maccabees host the No. 4 Rams of Farmingdale State College in the semifinal round of the conference championships. The match will take place on Thursday, at the USTA National Tennis Center, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
The winner of Wednesday's matchup will take on the winner of No. 3 Mount Saint Mary and No. 2 Merchant Marine's semifinal matchup, this weekend. The Knights and Mariners will play each other on Thursday, at the USTA National tennis Center, beginning at 5:00 p.m.
Yeshiva went undefeated in Skyline play this season (7-0 Skyline, 11-5 overall). In fact, the defending four-time Skyline champions have won 30 consecutive conference matches dating back to 2014. In the regular season finale this past Sunday, the Maccabees knocked off Merchant Marine, in a battle of the undefeated teams in conference play, to clinch the No. 1 seed.
Farmingdale (4-3 Skyline, 4-9 overall) earned the fourth and final spot in the championships. The turning point of the Rams' season came on April 14. Farmingdale earned a narrow victory over Purchase College, 5-4. The Rams ended up getting into the tournament by just one game over the Panthers.
The Maccabees won their regular season matchup with the Rams, 9-0, back on March 25 at the Binghamton Racquet Club.
Leading the way for the Maccabeees has been junior
Adam Rosemblaum, who went 5-1 in Skyline singles matches this season, all at the No. 1 position. He also went 5-1 in No. 1 Skyline doubles matches. Junior
Mikey Ozery went unbeaten in Skyline singles play, with three out of his four victories coming in the second flight. Ozery won four out of five conference doubles contests.
Making an impact in his rookie season has been freshman
Dor Gutterman, who went 4-1 in conference singles matches. Two of those four victories came in the second flight. In doubles play, the phenom won six out of seven doubles contests and produced a 10-5 record overall. Senior
Charlie Friedman won all six of his Skyline singles matches, while going 5-0 in conference doubles contests.
For Farmingdale State, Steven Gaudio won four No. 1 singles matches and just as many doubles battles. Three out of the four wins in doubles came at the No. 1 flight against Skyline opponents. Cooper Everett won five out of his six singles matches during the year.
