BRONX, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University softball team suffered a pair of Skyline Conference losses to St. Joseph's College Brooklyn (10-0, 9-0), at Fordham University, on Sunday afternoon.
In game one, the Bears (12-18, 5-11 Skyline) scored six runs in the opening inning to take a commanding lead. Amber Wainwright kicked off St. Joseph Brooklyn's run production by launching a two-run home run to left, to give the visiting team the lead. The Bears added a pair of runs in the second, and then two more in the fourth, on their way to victory.
In the circle, Victoria Mahoney struck out eight YU batters to earn the complete-game shutout victory. Senior pitcher
Elisa Alweis pitched a complete game of her own, but took the loss. At the plate, junior shortstop
Basya Goldstein, senior center fielder
Ellie Chase, and Alweis each reached base with a single. Freshman designated player
Malky Perlberger drew a walk, while freshman second baseman
Chana Boltax stole a base.
It was a pitchers' duel in the early stages of the second game, as both teams were held scoreless through the first three innings. The Bears' lineup broke out in the fourth by scoring four runs in the frame. St. Joseph's added four more runs in the sixth and went on to earn the sweep.
Mahoney picked up her second complete-game shutout victory of the afternoon, striking out nine Yeshiva hitters in the process. Junior pitcher
Samantha Cohen went six innings, but was credited with the loss. At the plate, senior right fielder
Batya Schreier reached base with a single, while Goldstein drew a walk and stole a base.
It was senior day as graduating seniors Schreier, Chase, and Alweis were honored with a ceremony.
Yeshiva will conclude the 2018 season on Monday, with a Skyline doubleheader against Mount Saint Vincent, at Fordham University. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
