PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University baseball team dropped both ends of its Skyline Conference doubleheader to St. Joseph's College Long Island, 12-0 and 9-2, at Gregg Alfano Field on Sunday afternoon.
In the opening game, the Maccabees (3-23, 0-18 Skyline) held the Golden Eagles (22-14, 13-5 Skyline) scoreless for the first two frames, but St. Joseph's lineup broke out with a run in the third, four runs in the fourth, and seven runs in the fifth on its way to victory. The highlight of the game was a three-run homer by Lou Doria in the bottom of the fifth.
For the game, Anthony Papa earned the win in relief, striking out four YU batters without giving up a hit in two shutout innings pitched. Freshman pitcher
Yosef Rosenfield started the game and took the loss. Junior pitcher
Josh Fogel did not allow a run in 1.1 innings out of the bullpen.
Sophomore second baseman
Zachary Baly went 2-for-3, while junior left fielder
Aryeh Salovey produced a single. Senior right fielder
Mordechai Cohen drew a pair of walks, while senior shortstop
Shmuli Goldis and classmate
Chaim Nosson Rosenberg each produced a base on balls.
In game two, the Golden Eagles scored three runs in the home half of the third to take a 4-0 lead.
Goldis led off the top of the fourth with a single. He ended up scoring on a triple by Salovey, to pull YU to within three. It was Salovey's sixth triple of the season, which sets a program single-season record. The previous record was held by
Zachary Perl ('16), who hit five three-baggers in 2016. Salovey would eventually score on a wild pitch to cut YU's deficit in half.
St. Joseph's would counter with three runs in the bottom frame, and one run each in the fifth and sixth, to clinch the sweep.
For the game, Goldis went 2-for 3 with a stolen base. Salovey also produced a double, while sophomore third baseman
Alex Malech went 1-for-2 with a walk. Cohen and sophomore right fielder
Shmuel Silverstein each earned a base on balls.
On the mound, Thomas Crispyn earned the win in relief by pitching 1.2 shutout innings. For the Maccabees, Cohen struck out four batters in five innings pitched, but took the loss.
Yeshiva will play Vaughn College, in a non-conference doubleheader on Randall's Island, on Tuesday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. It will be senior day as graduating seniors Rosenberg and Goldis will be honored with a ceremony prior to first pitch.
