Baseball Earns Hard-Fought Win Over Vaughn on Senior Day

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University baseball team earned a hard-fought win over Vaughn College, 8-4, on Randall's Island Field 46 on Tuesday afternoon. Yeshiva now bumps its record to 4-23, while Vaughn falls to 0-7.

The two teams were held scoreless during the first two innings. In the top of the third, freshman first baseman Jacob Finkelstein produced his first collegiate hit to lead it off. He would eventually score from second on an RBI single by senior first baseman Chaim Nosson Rosenberg, to put the Macs on the board. Rosenberg would score Yeshiva's second run after senior shortstop Shmuli Goldis stole second.

With Yeshiva up by two runs in the top of the fifth, sophomore pitcher Sonny Braha lined a double to score Goldis, extending the Maccabees' lead to 3-0. The Warriors got two of those runs back in the bottom frame, thanks to a two-run double off the bat of Pat Silver Da Cruz. In the home half of the seventh, Huascar Nunez produced an RBI single to tie the game, 3-3.

In the top of the eighth, with runners on the corners and two outs, sophomore third baseman Alex Malech drilled a single to score first-year second baseman Zachary Baly to allow YU to regain the lead, 4-3.

Yeshiva's lineup broke out in the top of the ninth, scoring four runs. In that frame, Goldis produced an RBI single, while Baly drove in a pair of runs with a triple. Sophomore right fielder Aaron Vilinsky followed with an RBI single to give YU an 8-3 advantage.

In the bottom of the ninth, Malech got Silver Da Cruz to fly out to center, clinching the victory for Yeshiva.

For the afternoon, Braha picked up his second win of the season by pitching seven innings and striking out a career-high 10 batters. Malech gave up one earned run in two innings pitched out of the bullpen to earn the first save of his collegiate career. Joshua Colom went eight innings for Vaughn, but took the loss.

At the plate, Rosenberg went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and just as many stolen bases. Baly scored two runs and drew a walk. Goldis also scored a pair of runs, earned a base on balls, and stole four bases. Sophomore first baseman Simon Schoen drew a walk and scored a run. Sophomore third baseman Mordy Kirsch reached base with a single and a walk. Shafron produced a pair of hits, while freshman left fielder Yosef Rosenfield drew a pair of walks.

Before the game, Yeshiva University honored graduating seniors Rosenberg and Goldis, on senior day, prior to the start of the game.

The Maccabees will conclude the 2018 season with a doubleheader against the College of New Rochelle, on Sunday. The games will take place at Padavan-Preller Fields, beginning at 11:00 a.m.
