NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University women's volleyball team opened up the 2018 season by dropping a non-conference contest to Lehman College, in straight sets, at the Nat Holman Gymnasium on Friday afternoon. Set scores were 25-17, 25-18, and 25-10.
In the opening set, sophomore setter
Julie Chase produced back-to-back service aces to pull Yeshiva to within five, at 22-17. The Lightning (1-0) would recover and score the final three points of the game, to take the lead in the match, 1-0.
Yeshiva had a good start to the second set, as senior setter
Ellie Chase scored an ace to give the Macs an early lead. After Lehman scored three unanswered points, Yeshiva countered with three straight of its own to regain the advantage, 4-3. The Lightning jumped back into the lead, 9-5, but YU scored the set's next four points, highlighted by a kill from senior outside hitter
Batya Schreier, to tie it up. After falling behind, 13-9, Yeshiva would rally once again, as back-to-back kills by Schreier and sophomore middle blocker
Tehilla Teigman pulled the home team to within two. The Lightning countered with a 7-2 run to increase its lead, but back-to-back kills by senior middle blocker
Abigail Epstein and
Ellie Chase propelled Yeshiva to four unanswered points, narrowing the Lightning's lead to 20-17. However, Lehman finished the set strong by scoring five of the last six points to win the second game, 25-18, and put Yeshiva on the brink.
In the third set, first-year player
Rebekah Bargraser scored back-to-back points, first on kill and then by a service ace, to tie it up, 3-3. However, Lehman dominated the remainder of the stanza by going on a 22-7 run to clinch the game and the match.
For the afternoon, Teigman led all players with nine digs. Schreier produced a team-high five kills, while
Ellie Chase led her teammates with six assists. Senior libero
Melissa Stock anchored the defense with six digs.
Yeshiva will return to Nat Holman Gymnasium on Sunday, for a non-conference match against King's College (N.Y.). First serve is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
