PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University men's soccer team dropped its Skyline Conference matchup to St. Joseph's College Brooklyn, 2-0, on the Purchase College Soccer Field on Monday evening. The Bears advance to 4-8-1 overall (2-3-0 Skyline), while the Maccabees drop to 2-8-1 for the season (0-7-1 in league play).
The Bears scored both of their goals in the second half.
The first period was a defensive battle, as the Bears were held to just six shots in the first 45 minutes, while the Maccabees only executed four. The action intensified in the second half, with each team generating more shots and scoring opportunities.
Yeshiva had a great chance to take the lead in the 53
rd minute, as freshman midfielder
Jess Rom propelled a shot that went past a sea of SJCB defenders, including the opposing goalkeeper, and towards the net. However, the ball hit the left post and the match remained scoreless.
St. Joseph's Brooklyn finally cashed in during the 75
th minute, as senior midfielder Thomas Mastoras gathered the loose ball and rifled it into the net from well outside the box to give the visiting team the lead. Just over seven minutes later, sophomore midfielder Joseph Sepulveda added an insurance goal to give the Bears a 2-0 advantage, and that would be the final score.
For the evening, SJCB had the advantage in shots, 24-11, while Yeshiva had the edge in corner kicks, 5-3.
Freshman goalkeeper
Benjamin Brener made five saves for the Maccabees, while his counterpart Alejandro Oliveros stopped all five shots he faced to earn the shutout victory.
Yeshiva will head to Throggs Neck, N.Y., on Friday, October 25, as the Maccabees will battle the Privateers of Maritime College. The Skyline match will begin at 1:00 p.m.
