WEST HARRISON, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University baseball team dropped both ends of its non-conference doubleheader to the City College of New York, at Silver Lake Park, on Friday afternoon. Yeshiva (1-3) dropped the first game, 5-0, while falling in the second battle by a score of 6-1.
The Beavers' (3-2) pitching held the Maccabees to two hits in the first game, and just as many in the second contest.
Most of game one was a pitchers' duel. Junior
Alex Malech and senior Cal Romano held their respective opposing lineups scoreless through the first three innings. The Beavers had runners on first and second, with two outs, in the top of the fourth. Junior shortstop Hamley Volquez poked a single through the left side. Running from second base, freshman right fielder Josh Moreno was just able to elude the tag at home plate to score the first run of the game. Malech recovered by getting sophomore catcher Chris Moreno to fly out to center field to escape further trouble.
CCNY added a couple of more runs in the fifth, highlighted by an RBI single off the bat of junior center fielder Stephen Peters. In the top of the seventh, Chris Moreno and Volquez combined for back-to-back RBI singles to give CCNY more breathing room at 5-0. Yeshiva's lineup could not generate any pressure on CCNY, as the visiting team went on to earn the victory in the first contest, 5-0.
For the Maccabees, junior catcher
Max Goldstein and second-year shortstop
Zachary Baly each produced a single. On the mound, Malech pitched six innings, striking out six batters and only giving up two earned runs.
For the Beavers, Volquez went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Peters went 2-for-4 with three runs scored. All nine of City College's hits were singles. On the mound, Romano earned the complete-game victory, striking out five Yeshiva batters in seven innings pitched.
CCNY got on the board in the opening inning, thanks to a sacrifice fly from sophomore first baseman Michal Espinal. With runners on the corners, and just one out, senior starting pitcher
Aryeh Salovey was able to get Josh Moreno to ground into a 6-3 double play to escape the inning without further damage.
In the top of the third, CCNY had a runner on second and two outs. Espinal drove senior designated hitter Rob Mandich in on a triple to right field, and then scored on a throwing error to extend the Beavers' lead to 3-0. Yeshiva had its first big chance to score in the bottom of the fourth, as the Maccabees had a runner on second with one out. Junior center fielder
David Hanelin drew a walk, but Chris Moreno could not handle the pitch and it went to the backstop. Sophomore third baseman
Leib Fant tried to score from second but was thrown out at the plate. Yeshiva could not get a run across after four innings.
Yeshiva finally produced a run in the home half of the fifth, as Malech scored on a wild pitch to narrow CCNY's lead to 3-1. However, CCNY countered with three more runs in the seventh to go up by five. Espinal started the big inning with a walk with the bases loaded, while Josh Moreno and Volquez each produced an RBI single.
The Maccabees threatened to score in the bottom of the seventh, as Malech drew a walk and sophomore right fielder
Dovie Solomon singled for his first collegiate hit. However, sophomore pitcher Trent Alfred came into the game and retired the last two YU hitters to clinch the sweep for CCNY.
For the Beavers, Junior second baseman Cooper York scored two runs, while Volquez reached base in all four plate appearances and produced an RBI. Espinal drove in three runs. On the mound, Volquez went five innings, giving up no earned runs and striking out three, to earn the win. Sophomore pitcher Edgar Rodriguez pitched 1.1 innings of relief, striking out three Macs' batters in the process before Alfred closed the game.
For Yeshiva, Malech reached base with a single and drew a walk. Hanelin reached base via base on balls twice. Fant also reached base thanks to a walk. Salovey started the game on the mound and took the loss. Senior pitcher
Shmuel Silverstein gave up just one earned run in four innings of relief, while sophomore pitcher
Rafi Jacobs pitched one inning out of the bullpen.
Yeshiva will open Skyline Conference play on Sunday, with a doubleheader against St. Joseph's College Brooklyn. The game is currently scheduled to take place at Calvert Faux Park, beginning at 11:00 a.m.
