YAPHANK, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University baseball team dropped a pair of games in its Skyline-opening doubleheader to St. Joseph's College Brooklyn, 9-3 and 16-1, at Baseball Heaven on Sunday afternoon.

For Yeshiva (1-5, 0-2 Skyline), history was made as senior left fielder Aryeh Salovey launched his second home run of 2019, in the top of the sixth inning of game one. Salovey becomes the first player in program history to hit multiple home runs in a season.

After the Bears (6-1-1, 2-0 Skyline) scored one run in the first inning, sophomore pitcher Dovie Solomon held their lineup scoreless in the second inning. However, St. Joseph's exploded in the bottom of the third, scoring five runs. Junior first baseman William Deluca capped off the rally with a three-run homer to left center, to extend the home team's lead to 6-0.

In the bottom of the fifth, sophomore catcher Michael Ryan produced an RBI triple to put YU in a 7-0 hole.

Sophomore third baseman Leib Fant led off the top of the sixth with a single, for Yeshiva. Salovey then delivered his historic home run to center field to cut the Maccabees' deficit to five runs.

St. Joseph's got those two runs back in the bottom of the seventh, thanks to a two-run single off the bat of freshman pinch hitter Louis Lombardi. In the top of the eight, junior center fielder David Hanelin produced a two-out single, and then advanced to second on a passed ball. Freshman designated hitter David Kreisberg drove Hanelin in with an RBI single for Yeshiva's third run. It would not be enough as St. Joseph's took game one, 9-3.

Solomon took the loss, but only gave up two earned runs in six innings pitched, while striking out four batters. Sophomore pitcher SJ Tannenbaum pitched a pair of innings in relief, giving up an earned run and fanning two hitters.

For SJCB, sophomore pitcher C.J. Bunnicelli struck out nine YU batters in six innings to earn the win. Senior reliever Matthew Rienzi picked up the save by striking out four opposing batters in three innings out of the bullpen.

For Yeshiva, senior second baseman Shmuel Silverstein and junior shortstop Zachary Baly each slapped a single.

In game two, the Bears scored three runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back. Junior third baseman Michael Gonzalez, classmate Kevin Reyes, and Deluca each produced an RBI single during the frame. The big inning came in bottom of the fifth, as St. Joseph's scored seven runs to break the game open.

Junior catcher Max Goldstein scored Yeshiva's lone run on a wild pitch in the top of the sixth. The Bears went on to earn the convincing Skyline victory in game two, 16-1.

For the Maccabees, Salovey, junior third baseman Mordy Kirsch, and sophomore right fielder Yosef Rosenfield each drew a walk. Goldstein, sophomore second baseman Daniel Fischoff, and senior designated hitter Mordechai Cohen reached base with single. Cohen took the loss on the mound, while Kreisberg pitched a scoreless inning in relief.

For the Bears, senior shortstop Adam Schwartz went 4-for-4 with a triple. Gonzales and Reyes each went 3-for-4, with the latter producing two doubles and an RBI. DeLuca earned his first win of the season, on the mound, striking out nine Yeshiva batters in five innings pitched. Freshman pitcher Zach Stevens pitched two shutout innings in relief.

Yeshiva will host the College at Old Westbury, in a Skyline doubleheader at Silver Lake Park, on Friday morning. First pitch is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
