PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University baseball team suffered a pair of Skyline Conference losses to Purchase College, 11-1 and 9-4, at the Purchase College Baseball Field on Sunday afternoon. The Panthers advance to 2-0 in the conference (9-4 overall), while the Maccabees drop to 0-4 in Skyline play (1-7 overall).
Purchase came storming out of the gates with five runs in the opening inning of game one. The big blow came off the bat of sophomore first baseman Tighe Jorgensen, who produced a two-run double down the left field line. Third-year right fielder John Fitzgerald, junior third baseman Patrick Wallace, and third-year center fielder Gavin Brien each chipped in with a run-scoring single in the frame.
Yeshiva's lone run came in the top of the seventh, thanks to first-year pitcher
Dovie Solomon hitting into a fielder's choice for a run batted in. Freshman first baseman
David Kreisberg scored on the play from third, to pull the Maccabees to within 6-1. Purchase extended its lead in the bottom frame, thanks to a two-run double off the bat of sophomore pinch hitter Brendan Rose to make it 8-1 in favor of the home team. In the bottom of the eighth, senior shortstop Gregory Walsh produced an RBI single to clinch the victory for Purchase, 11-1.
For the game, sophomore designated hitter Dylan Flynn earned three walks and stole four bases. Jorgenson went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and just as many doubles. Sophomore center fielder Glennd Jarrin went 3-for-3 with a pair of stolen bases. Senior pitcher Patrick Cunningham did not surrender an earned run, while striking out five Macs' batters in seven innings pitched, to earn the win.
For the Maccabees, junior second baseman
Zachary Baly went 2-for-3 with a walk, while junior shortstop
Alex Malech and Kreisberg each reached base with a single. Solomon earned a base on balls at the plate. On the mound, he pitched 5.1 innings, giving up six earned runs and striking out three batters, to take the loss. Sophomore pitcher
Rafi Jacobs tossed a scoreless inning of relief.
In the second contest, Flynn and Wallace produced back-to-back RBI triples in the bottom of the first to put Purchase up, 2-0. Sophomore right fielder Zack Dicanio followed with a run-scoring single to cap off the three-run frame for the Panthers.
Yeshiva was able to get one run back in the top of the second. With runners on first and second, and one out, sophomore catcher
SJ Tannenbaum slapped a single to score senior pitcher
Mordechai Cohen to pull YU to within two.
Cohen held the Panthers scoreless for the next two innings. However, in the bottom of the fourth, an RBI single by Flynn and a run-scoring double by Wallace extended Purchase's lead to 5-1.
In the top of the fifth, Yeshiva had a runner on second with two outs. Junior center fielder
David Hanelin drilled a single to score senior second baseman
Shmuel Silverstein to narrow the Panthers' lead to 6-2.
Purchase manufactured three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, thanks to an RBI single off the bat of freshman left fielder Jemal Betances and a two-run hit courtesy of Walsh to put YU in a seven-run hole.
Yeshiva had a big opportunity in the top of the seventh. With the bases loaded, two outs and one run already in, freshman second baseman
Daniel Fischoff earned a base on balls that scored Silverstein from third to shrink the opposition's lead to 9-4. However, junior pitcher
Max Goldstein flew out to right field to clinch the sweep for Purchase.
For the second game, Flynn went 4-for-5 with two triples and a stolen base. Wallace went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, two runs batted in, and a stolen base. He was a home run shy of the cycle. On the mound, Fitzgerald struck out 11 YU batters in 6.1 innings pitched to earn the victory.
For the Maccabees, Baly hit a single and drew a walk. Senior left fielder
Aryeh Salovey singled, while Silverstein earned two bases on balls, and successfully stole second base. Cohen reached base with a walk. On the mound, he started the game and took the loss.
