WEST HARRISON, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University baseball team suffered a pair of hard-fought Skyline losses to the College at Old Westbury, at Silver Lake Park, on Monday evening. YU (1-9, 0-6 Skyline) dropped the first game, 7-1. The Maccabees took a 4-3 lead into the top of the seventh inning of game two, but the Panthers (5-7-1, 2-2 Skyline) rallied with five runs on their way to victory.
In the bottom of the sixth inning of game two, senior left fielder
Aryeh Salovey came up to the plate with the game-tying run on base. He drilled an 0-2 pitch over the center field wall for a two-run homer that gave the Maccabees a 4-3 lead. It was the third round-tripper of the season for Salovey, extending the program's all-time single season record. Down to its final three outs, Old Westbury scored five runs in the seventh to earn the come-from-behind victory.
Back in the opening game, an RBI single off the bat of junior second baseman Brandon Wilson highlighted a two-run first inning for Old Westbury. Down four runs in the bottom of the fourth, Yeshiva had runners on the corners with two outs. Second-year catcher
Max Goldstein poked a single through the right side to drive in junior second baseman
Zachary Baly to narrow the Panthers' lead to 4-1.
That's as close as Yeshiva would get, as a two-run single by sophomore catcher Michael Borsch extended Old Westbury's lead to 7-1, in the top of the seventh. Yeshiva was held hitless for the remaining three innings as the Panthers went on to earn the win in game one, 7-1.
Old Westbury outhit Yeshiva, 10-4, during the opening contest. Borsch drove in three runs, while sophomore center fielder Sean Paprocki and Wilson each scored twice. Rafi Jacobs did not surrender an earned run and struck out four batters in 3.1 innings out of the bullpen.
Paprocki led off game two with a towering shot to right center field, that split the outfielders and went all the way to the wall. He rounded all the bases for an inside-the-park home run to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. Sophomore pitcher
SJ Tannenbaum settled in on the mound, as he did not give up another run until the fourth inning when freshman left fielder Zach Liotta scored on a fielding error to put the visiting team up, 2-0.
In the home half of the fourth, junior center fielder
David Hanelin came up with the bases loaded and one out. He nudged the ball past the mound for an infield single, which allowed junior first baseman
Alex Malech to score from third to narrow Old Westbury's lead to 2-1. Sophomore shortstop
Leib Fant was able to score on a passed ball in the next at-bat to tie the game, 2-2.
Kreisberg came in relief for Yeshiva and retired Old Westbury in the fifth. The Panthers were able to score in the sixth to take the lead.
In the home half of the sixth, senior pitcher Matt Bohenek retired the first two YU hitters. Hanelin kept Yeshiva alive with a single down the right field line. Salovey was up next and took an 0-2 pitch and drilled it over the center field wall to give Yeshiva its first lead of the evening, 4-3.
The Panthers were down to their final three outs. However, two Yeshiva errors in the inning allowed Old Westbury to score five runs to take an 8-4 lead. Wilson scored the eventual game-winning run thanks to a passed ball. The big blow came off the bat of senior first baseman John Condon who drove in two baserunners on a single to extend the Panthers' lead to four runs.
The Maccabees had one last chance in the bottom of the seventh. Malech singled to right to give YU runners on first and second with one out. However, Bohenek retired the last two YU batters to clinch the sweep for Old Westbury and earn his first victory of the season on the mound.
