Baseball Drops Two Games to College of Staten Island

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University baseball team lost both games of its non-conference doubleheader to the College of Staten Island, by scores of 30-2 and 15-6, at the CSI Baseball Complex on Wednesday evening. Yeshiva drops to 1-11, while Staten Island advances to 7-9.

The Dolphins scored seven runs in the second, eight runs in the third, and 13 runs in the fifth to earn the victory. Junior shortstop Andrew Nathan launched a two-run home run, while junior designated hitter John Pomarico lined a solo home run. Freshman pitcher Steven Collica earned the win on the mound by striking out nine YU batters and giving up just two runs in six innings pitched.

For the Maccabees, junior second baseman Zachary Baly and sophomore first baseman Dovie Solomon each produced a hit and scored a run. Senior left fielder Aryeh Salovey and senior shortstop Shmuel Silverstein each picked up an RBI, with the latter drawing a walk. Senior designated hitter Jacob Finkelstein reached base twice on walks, while freshman utility player Daniel Fischoff and first-year catcher SJ Tannenbaum each earned a base on balls. On the mound, junior pitcher Sonny Braha started the game and took the loss.

The Maccabees came storming out of the gate in game two, as junior shortstop Alex Malech drove in two runs on a single through the left side to give YU an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. After CSI sliced YU's lead in half during the bottom frame, Yeshiva scored four runs in the top of the second to extend its advantage to 6-1. The big blow in the inning came off the bat of Salovey, as he crushed a two-run double that put YU up by four runs, at the time.

In the bottom of the third, freshman left fielder Nick Falcone drove in two runs with a single to tie the game, 6-6. In the bottom of the fourth, senior catcher Sean Becker lined an RBI double down the left field line to give the Dolphins the lead for good. That was the beginning of a four-run frame that put the game out of reach for the Maccabees. In the bottom of the fifth, junior second baseman Jett Nouvertne drilled a triple, with all three ducks on the pond, to clear the bases and break the game wide open as CSI's lead increased to 15-6. That ended up being the final score.

For the Macs, Salovey went 3-for-4, including a triple, while Baly drew three walks and scored a pair of runs. Malech drew two walks, while junior center fielder David Hanelin had a single, drove in a run, and crossed home plate once. Junior third baseman Mordy Kirsch and senior first baseman Joseph Goffstein each scored a run, with the former hitting a single. Silverstein stole a base. On the mound, Fischoff started the game and was credited with the loss.

For CSI, freshman pitcher Alexis Santos earned the win out of the bullpen, striking out four YU batters in 3.2 innings pitched. He did not give up any runs and held the Maccabees' lineup hitless.

Yeshiva will resume Skyline play on Friday morning, against Farmingdale State for a pair of games at Overpeck Park, beginning at 9:30 a.m.
