Softball Drops Both Ends of Season-Opening Doubleheader to John Jay College

BRONX, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University softball team dropped both ends of its season-opening doubleheader to John Jay College, at Bahoshy Field, on Thursday evening. The scores were 8-0 and 18-3.

In the opening game, the Bloodhounds (2-0) scored five runs during the first two innings and never looked back. Four of those runs were scored in the second inning, highlighted by an RBI double off the bat of sophomore catcher Tommi Mandell. In the top of the seventh, Mandell hit a sacrifice fly to right that scored the Bloodhounds' eighth and final run of the game, as the visiting team went on to earn the victory.

For the Maccabees (0-2), senior center fielder Leah Feder and sophomore first baseman Yael Itskowitz each produced a single, while senior catcher Sarah Hiller reached base via a walk.

For John Jay, freshman right fielder Ashley Sclafani went 2-for-3 with three stolen bases and just as many runs scored, while senior left fielder Inelza Salcedo drove in two runs. Mandell crossed home plate twice.

In the circle, senior Samantha Cohen pitched a complete game for the Macs, but took the loss. Freshman Julianne Graepel gave up just two hits and struck out 11 YU batters in seven innings pitched, to earn the shutout victory.

John Jay once again had a big second inning in game two, this time scoring five runs to take an early 6-0 advantage after two innings of play. The highlight of the second frame was a two-run single by Mandell.

Down by eight runs in the bottom of the third, Yeshiva's bats came to life as sophomore second baseman Malky Perlberger and Feder combined for back-to-back RBI singles to narrow the Bloodhounds' lead to 9-3. However, John Jay responded with nine runs in the fourth to put the game out of reach. Freshman second baseman Nicole Lopez and junior center fielder Jessica Barbaria each produced two-run singles during the frame. Yeshiva could not score the rest of the way as John Jay won game two, 18-3, to earn the sweep.

For the Maccabees, sophomore third baseman Chana Weinberg hit a double and scored a run, while Hiller drew two more walks and crossed home plate once. Sophomore starting pitcher Chana Boltax scored one run.

For the Bloodhounds, Mandell reached base in all four plate appearances and scored four times, while adding two stolen bases. Graepel and Lopez each scored a pair of runs. Barbaria had three runs batted in, while junior third baseman Mariela Guzman went 2-for-3 with an RBI single.

Boltax went six innings in the circle to take the loss, while sophomore AnnMarie Rivera earned a complete-game victory.

Yeshiva will return to Bahoshy Field on Sunday, for a non-conference doubleheader against Cairn University, beginning at 4:00 p.m.
