BRONX, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University softball team dropped both ends of its non-conference doubleheader to Cairn University, at Bahoshy Field, on Sunday afternoon. The scores were 6-1 and 15-6.
In the opening game, sophomore pitcher Krista Earl tossed a complete-game victory, giving up just one hit and striking out nine batters. She retired the first 12 hitters she faced. Junior third baseman
Gabi Chutter broke up Earl's bid for a perfect game with a single to lead off the bottom of the fifth.
Cairn's (3-5) lineup scored two runs in the second, and five more in the third, to put the game out of reach for Yeshiva (0-4). The highlights were a two-run triple by junior right fielder Jessica Rolo and an RBI double off the bat of freshman third baseman Tori Knox.
For the Maccabees, senior left fielder
Basya Goldstein scored YU's lone run thanks to a fielding error in the bottom of the sixth. In the circle, senior pitcher
Samantha Cohen went the distance but took the loss.
In game two, Yeshiva trailed 1-0 heading to the bottom of the first. After Goldstein led it off with a double, she was driven in via an RBI double to left field off the bat of senior catcher
Sarah Hiller to tie the game, 1-1. Later in the inning, sophomore shortstop
Miriam Kazlow scored on a fielding error to put YU up, 2-1.
After a scoreless second inning, Cairn had runners on second and third, with one out. Knox hit a sacrifice fly to score junior center fielder Angela Paskitti to even the game at two runs apiece.
The visiting team broke the game open in the top of the fourth, scoring five runs to take a commanding 7-2 hold. During the frame, Rolo produced a two-run single, while freshman catcher Olivia Nieto executed a run-scoring single of her own.
In the home half of the fourth, Hiller reached base with a single. With two outs, Chutter brought her home with a triple to right center field, to narrow YU's deficit to four runs.
After Cairn scored two runs in the top of the fifth, Yeshiva countered with three runs in the bottom frame. Goldstein began the scoring with an RBI single that scored sophomore first baseman
Yael Itskowitz. Later in the inning, Goldstein would cross home plate thanks to an RBI single off the bat of Hiller, narrowing the Maccabees' deficit to 9-6. Cairn brought in game one's winner, Earl, to pitch in relief and she would shut down Yeshiva's lineup the rest of the way. Cairn scored three runs in the sixth, and added three more in the seventh, to pull away for the victory.
Cohen pitcher her second complete-game of the evening but was once again on the losing end. Sophomore pitcher Reaven East earned the win, going 4.2 innings and striking out four batters. Earl collected her first save of the season. At the plate, junior third baseman Meaghan Marietta went 3-for-5, including a two-run single.
For the Maccabees, Goldstein went 3-for-5, with a double and a triple, while Hiller produced three hits in four at-bats and reached base with a walk. Kazlow and senior right fielder
Sarah Elspas each slapped a single. Sophomore designated player
Chana Weinberg drew a walk, while second-year infielder
Chana Boltax scored a run.
Yeshiva will return to Bahoshy Field on Tuesday, as the visiting team in a Skyline Conference doubleheader against St. Joseph's College Brooklyn, beginning at 6:00 p.m.
