Softball Drops Two Skyline Games to St. Joseph's College Brooklyn

BRONX, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University softball team dropped both ends of its Skyline-opening doubleheader to St. Joseph's College Brooklyn, 8-0 and 9-1, at Bahoshy Field on Tuesday evening. The Bears (5-6, 2-0 Skyline) served as the official home team for both contests.

In the opening game, senior pitcher Victoria Mahoney did not allow a single hit as she struck out nine batters in six innings pitched to earn the win. Yeshiva's (0-6, 0-2 Skyline) only baserunner of the first game was senior catcher Sarah Hiller, who reached on a fielding error in the top of the first inning.

Senior pitcher Samantha Cohen held the Bears' lineup scoreless for the first two innings, but St. Joseph's scored a pair of runs in the third. Mahoney helped her cause by driving in the Bears' second run on a single up the middle. In the bottom of the fourth, freshman center fielder Vivian Tomovich broke the game open with a two-run double and ended up scoring on an RBI single off the bat of first-year third baseman Ashleigh Hartwig. In the home half of the sixth, Hartwig drilled an RBI single down the left field line to clinch the first game for the Bears.

Cohen pitched five-plus innings to take the loss.

In the first inning of game two, Boltax hit a single and stole second. Hiller drove her in with a triple to center field, to give the Maccabees a 1-0 lead. However, St. Joseph's scored three runs in the bottom frame, highlighted by a walk from senior second baseman Nicole Quintana with the bases loaded and an RBI single off the bat of Hartwig.

The Bears scored four runs in the fourth to break the game open. Freshman shortstop Alexis Buchanan registered an RBI single, while Hartwig drove in two runs on a single through the left side. St. Joseph's went on to win the game, 9-1, to complete the sweep.

For the game, Mahoney drew two walks with the bases loaded. Freshman pitcher Jessica Mecham earned the win by tossing five innings, giving up one run and striking out seven YU batters, while sophomore pitcher Chana Boltax took the loss in the circle for the Maccabees.

Hiller went 2-for-2 for Yeshiva, while Boltax singled and sophomore pinch hitter Noa Applebaum drilled a triple.

Hartwig had five RBI for the evening.

Yeshiva will hit the road on Friday, for a non-conference doubleheader at Sussex Community College, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
