BRONX, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University softball team dropped both ends of its Skyline Conference doubleheader to Mount Saint Mary College, at Bahoshy Field, on Sunday evening. The scores were 14-2 and 20-3.
In the opening inning of the first game, freshman first baseman Mackenzie Hymes came up with the bases loaded, nobody out, and a run already in. She drilled the ball over the left field wall for a grand slam, to give the Knights (3-9, 2-0 Skyline) a 5-0 advantage. Senior third baseman Nicolette Moustouka scored the sixth run of the inning for MSMC, thanks to a fielding error.
The Maccabees (0-8, 0-4 Skyline) got two runs back in the bottom of the first. After senior left fielder
Basya Goldstein led off the frame with a single, sophomore second baseman
Chana Boltax drove her in with a double to left center field. Boltax scored Yeshiva's second run thanks to a throwing error.
Mount Saint Mary increased its lead in the fifth, as an RBI single off the bat of junior left fielder Lauren Oury and a two-run single down the right field line by freshman first baseman Julia Rigney put Yeshiva in a 14-2 hole. That ended up being the final score.
For the Knights, junior shortstop Emily Lang went 2-for-3 with a walk. Oury went 2-for-4 with a double. Senior center fielder Amanda Almodovar also went 2-for-4 and added a stolen base. In the circle, sophomore pitcher Morgan O'Neill struck out six batters in five innings to pick up the win.
For the Maccabees, senior center fielder
Leah Feder hit a double and drew a walk. Senior catcher
Sarah Hiller reached base with a walk, while junior third baseman
Gabi Chutter singled. Boltax stole a base, while sophomore right fielder
Chana Weinberg earned a base on balls. Senior pitcher
Samantha Cohen pitched five innings and was credited with the loss.
Mount Saint Mary came flying out of the gates in game two, scoring nine runs in the first inning. The big blow came off the bat of Almodovar, who tripled to right center which allowed the seventh and eighth runs of the frame to score. Three of Mount Saint Mary's first inning runs were manufactured by walks with the bases loaded.
Yeshiva would not go down without a fight. With runners on second and third, nobody out in the bottom of the first, Hiller produced an RBI single that scored Goldstein to narrow MSMC's lead to eight runs. Chutter followed with a two-run double to center, scoring Boltax and Hiller, to pull the Macs to within six. That was as close as Yeshiva would get, as Mount Saint Mary scored 11 runs over the course of the next three innings on its way to a 20-3 victory.
For the second game, Lang went 3-for-3 with four RBI, three runs scored, and a walk. Oury had a hit in all three plate appearances, driving in two runs and scoring twice, while drawing a pair of walks. Almodovar and O'Neill each went 2-for-4, with the former drawing a walk and stealing two bases. Hymes earned a complete-game victory in the circle, striking out four batters.
For Yeshiva, Goldstein went 2-for-3 with a triple and a stolen base, while Boltax walked and had a stolen base of her own. Chutter received a base on balls. In the circle, Boltax took the loss.
Yeshiva will be back in action on Tuesday, for a non-conference doubleheader against Lehman College, on the South Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
