KINGS POINT, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University baseball team dropped both ends of its Skyline Conference doubleheader to the United States Merchant Marine Academy, by scores of 29-2 and 9-1, at Lower Roosevelt Field on Sunday afternoon. The Mariners advance to 14-7 overall and 6-2 in Skyline play, while the Maccabees drop to 1-15 for the season and 0-10 in conference play.
In the opening game, the Mariners jumped out of the gate with eight runs in the first and added six more in the second on their way to victory. The home team scored at least one run in every inning of the opening contest.
Leading the way for USMMA was senior center fielder Jesse Reinebold who went 4-for-6 with a pair of RBI singles, while freshman second baseman Zach Coutts produced a two-run triple. Senior John Kelly Jr. started the game on the mound and went five innings, giving up just one run and striking out eight batters, to earn the victory. Senior Trevor Fox struck out three YU batters in two innings of relief.
For Yeshiva, sophomore right fielder
Yosef Rosenfield slapped an RBI single to center that scored junior center fielder
David Hanelin for Yeshiva's first run, back in the top of the fifth. Hanelin also scored Yeshiva's second run of the game, in the top of the seventh, thanks to an RBI double off the bat of sophomore pitcher
Leib Fant. Hanelin finished the game 2-for-3, including a triple, while junior shortstop
Zachary Baly and senior left fielder
Aryeh Salovey each reached base with a single. Freshman third baseman
Daniel Fischoff drew a walk. On the mound, sophomore
Ionatan Wolfson started the game and took the loss.
In game two, junior pitcher
Alex Malech kept the Mariners scoreless in the first inning, but USMMA put up a six-spot in the second. The highlight of Merchant Marine's big inning was an RBI triple by Coutts and a two-run single courtesy of freshman first baseman Zac Skov.
Hanelin's big game one carried over into game two, as he delivered an RBI single to score Salovey for Yeshiva's only run of the game. Hanelin once again went 2-for-3, while Salovey singled and Malech earned a base on balls.
On the mound, Malech took the loss. Freshman pitcher
David Kreisberg gave up just one earned run and struck out five batters in three innings out of the bullpen. For USMMA, junior Ben Kane started the game and racked up seven strikeouts in four innings to earn the win.
Yeshiva will host Vaughn College, for a nine-inning game at Palisades Park on Tuesday, beginning at 5:00 p.m.
