Baseball Can't Hold Lead During Pair of Losses to Lehman College

BRONX, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University baseball team suffered two hard-fought losses to Lehman College, on the South Field, on Wednesday afternoon. The Maccabees lost a heartbreaker in walk-off fashion, 10-9, in game one and then dropped the second game by a score of 17-4.

In the first contest, the Maccabees (2-21) had a 9-8 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning. Lehman (7-16) had runners on the corners with one out. Senior infielder Mark Vargas came through with a scorching double to center field, scoring two runs to clinch the come-from-behind victory for the Lightning.

Yeshiva outhit the Lehman, 14-12, in game one but five Macs' errors helped the Lightning come out on top.

Back in the first inning, junior shortstop Henry Gonzalez launched a three-run homer to center that put the home team up, 3-0. The Maccabees answered with two runs in the top of the third, as sophomore right fielder Avi Nat lined a double to center to score senior left fielder Aryeh Salovey from second to cut the deficit to two runs. After junior shortstop Alex Malech reached base with a single to put runners on the corners, he stole second, which allowed Nat to steal home to shrink the Lightning's lead to 3-2.

After Lehman scored three runs in the bottom of the third, Yeshiva countered with five scored in the fourth to take a 7-6 advantage. In that frame, junior center fielder David Hanelin drilled a double to center, scoring junior third baseman Mordy Kirsch and second-year infielder Zachary Baly to slice Yeshiva's deficit in half. Hanelin ended up scoring thanks to an RBI single off the bat of freshman first baseman David Kreisberg to pull YU to within one. After Kreisberg came around to score on a fielding error by the shortstop, Malech came up to the plate with a runner on first and two outs. Nat stole second. He then came around to score on Malech's single to give the Maccabees their first lead of the afternoon.

In the bottom of the fourth, an RBI double by junior catcher Anthony Riley highlighted a two-run frame that allowed Lehman to regain the advantage. In the top of the fifth, Baly picked up an RBI on a ground ball to second, that allowed Kirsch to score the game-tying run. Yeshiva would once again take the lead in the top of the sixth, as Malech crossed home plate thanks to a fielding error by Lehman's first baseman.

Yeshiva was three outs away from victory, but sophomore infielder Michael Zerbo led off the frame with a single. Senior pitcher Shmuel Silverstein was able to get junior outfielder Fernando Polanco to hit a ground ball to second. The Macs got the lead runner but could not complete the double play. The Lightning ended up having runners at the corners for Vargas, who lined the ball over the head of Hanelin in center to score two runs and clinch the come-from-behind walk-off victory for Lehman.

Junior pitcher Ryan Ninivaggi got the win out of the bullpen, tossing 2.1 innings, striking out three batters, and only giving up one earned run. Silverstein suffered the loss. Junior pitcher Sonny Braha started the game for the Maccabees and went five innings, giving up seven earned runs but striking out 10 batters.

At the plate, Malech went 4-for-4, including a double, and stole two bases. Hanelin went 4-for-5, while Kirsch singled, walked twice, scored just as many times, and stole a base. Nat stole two bases, while junior catcher Max Goldstein singled and successfully stole second.

Yeshiva grabbed a 2-0 lead in the opening inning of the second game, thanks to an RBI single by Malech and a run-scoring double off the bat of Kreisberg. Lehman countered with two runs in the bottom frame, thanks to a two-run single by senior outfielder Namir Garcia.

The Lightning broke the game open in the bottom of the second with five runs to take a 7-2 lead. Gonzalez and Garcia each produced a two-run double during the frame.

Yeshiva got two runs back in the fourth. Silverstein scored on a dropped fly ball by Lehman's right fielder. Later in the frame, Salovey launched a double to right field to score Baly and narrow YU's deficit to 8-4.

That's as close as Yeshiva would get as the Lightning scored two runs in the fourth, three in the fifth, and four in the sixth to earn the non-conference sweep.

Junior pitcher Charlie Hernandez earned the win in relief for the Lightning, pitching four innings and giving up two runs, none of them earned. Kreisberg started the game for Yeshiva and took the loss. Sophomore pitcher SJ Tannenbaum stuck out two Lightning hitters out of the bullpen.

Hanelin's big afternoon continued, going 2-for-4 and scoring a run. Salovey also went 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Kreisberg produced two hits in four at-bats. Goldstein and Baly each singled. Nat and Silverstein each earned a base on balls, with the latter stealing a base.

Yeshiva will battle Mount Saint Vincent, in a Skyline Conference doubleheader at Silver Lake Park, on Friday morning. First pitch is scheduled for 10:00 a.m.
