WEST HARRISON, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University baseball team suffered two Skyline Conference losses to Mount Saint Vincent, by scores of 12-5 and 21-0, at Silver Lake Park on Friday afternoon. The Dolphins advance to 13-12 overall, and 8-6 in league games, while the Maccabees drop to 2-23 for the season, and 0-16 in conference contests.
Yeshiva got off to a strong start in game one, scoring three runs before Mount Saint Vincent had a chance to bat. With junior center fielder
David Hanelin on first, and one out, senior left fielder
Aryeh Salovey launched a two-run homer to right field, putting Yeshiva up 2-0. It's Salovey's fourth round-tripper of the year, which extends the program's single-season record. He also moves into sole possession of first place on YU's all-time career home runs list, surpassing Yeshiva University baseball alumnus, and current YU assistant coach,
Jeremy Schwartz ('11), who hit three home runs during his career.
Later in the inning, junior first baseman
Alex Malech tripled to right. He then scored on a passed ball during the next at-bat to extend the Macs' lead to 3-0.
Yeshiva added an insurance run in the top of the fourth, thanks to a sacrifice fly by junior designated hitter
Max Goldstein that scored sophomore catcher
SJ Tannenbaum, to put CMSV in a 4-0 hole.
Sophomore pitcher
Dovie Solomon did not allow a hit through four innings. At one point, he retired 11 straight batters. However, he ran into trouble in the bottom of the fifth, as he walked three hitters to load the bases. Freshman center fielder Jake Blinstrub cleared the bases with a double to pull the Dolphins to within one.
After Solomon hit the next batter, he was replaced by Malech. Junior right fielder Anthony Nocero hit a slow roller to third base and beat out the throw for a single that allowed Blinstrub to score and tie the game, 4-4. After a double steal, Mount Saint Vincent had runners on second and third, with one out. Freshman designated hitter Michael Grisanti hit a ground ball that was fielded by junior shortstop
Zachary Baly. He threw it to Tannenbaum at home plate, who tagged out sophomore shortstop Matt DiNorcia to prevent the Dolphins from taking the lead.
Mount Saint Vincent would take advantage of its next opportunity, as an RBI single off the bat of freshman first baseman Eric Zimmerman allowed CMSV to take its first lead of the game, at 5-4.
The Dolphins added another run in the sixth, and then scored three more in the seventh, to put the game out of reach for the Macs. The big blow was an RBI triple by sophomore second baseman Isidoros Bartziokas that placed YU in a five-run disadvantage.
Yeshiva got one run back in the eight, thanks to an RBI groundout by Malech that scored Salovey, but it was not enough. Mount Saint Vincent added three more runs in the bottom frame on its way to a 12-5 win in game one.
For the game, Salovey went 2-for-4, including his historic home run. Hanelin slapped two hits in three at-bats, scoring a run, drawing a walk, and stealing a base in the process. Malech and Tannenbaum each went 2-for-4, with the latter hitting a double and scoring a run. Senior second baseman
Shmuel Silverstein produced a hit and drew a walk. On the mound, Solomon pitched 4.1 innings, but suffered the hard-fought loss. Malech tossed 3.2 innings in relief.
For the Dolphins, Nocero and Zimmerman each went 3-for-5. Sophomore pitcher Sean McHugh went six innings out of the bullpen and only gave up one run, while striking out three batters.
In game two, the Dolphins scored a run in the first, and added seven more in the second, on their way to a 21-0 victory. Grisanti launched a two-run homer during the second game, while Nocero added an RBI triple. Junior pitcher Tyler Reyes earned a complete-game shutout victory, striking out eight batters and only giving up three hits.
For the Maccabees, sophomore pitcher
Rafi Jacobs started the game and took the loss. Salovey and Silverstein each reached base with a single. Baly and Hanelin each drew a walk, with the latter also registering a base hit.
Yeshiva will continue its Skyline Conference road trip on Sunday, with two games at Maritime College, beginning at 12:00 p.m.
