ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University roller hockey team competed in the National Collegiate Roller Hockey Association (NCRHA) championships from April 10-13, at Bill Gray's Regional Iceplex, in Rochester, N.Y.
After going undefeated in pool play, Yeshiva rallied from a three-goal deficit to earn a thrilling overtime victory over Syracuse University, 7-6, during the Sweet 16. Yeshiva's magical season ended with a 7-0 loss to eventual National Champion Endicott College in the Elite Eight.
The Maccabees earned an at-large bid into the NCHRA tournament after going 10-2-2 (22 points) during the season.
YU got off to a strong start in the national tournament, winning all three games in pool play. In the first contest, Yeshiva dominated James Madison University by a score of 8-0, on April 10. Later that day, the Maccabees came back to earn a convincing win over the Miners of Missouri S&T, 10-2. Less than 24 hours later, YU clinched a spot in the Sweet 16 by defeating Sam Houston State University, 8-3.
In the Sweet 16 showdown with in-state rival Syracuse University, on April 12, the Maccabees fell behind by a score of 2-0 in the first period.
The Orange extended their lead, just 27 seconds into the second, as Marc Orlin's second goal of the afternoon put the Macs in a 3-0 hole. Less than two minutes later, Yeshiva struck on the power play as a goal by
Daniel Bordan pulled the Blue and White to within two goals.
Moshe Genuth was credited with the assist. Bordan scored again, just over three minutes later, to shrink SU's lead to 3-2. This time it was
David Soffer who provided the helper. After Orlin's third goal of the afternoon extended Syracuse's lead to 4-2, Genuth took a feed from
Zev Markowitz and found the back of the net to narrow the opposition's advantage to 4-3, with 2:01 remaining in the stanza. That would be the score heading into the second intermission.
The Maccabees got off to a strong start in the third, as Markowitz rifled the puck into the net to tie the game, 4-4, with 9:38 left to play in regulation time. Anthony Bellman scored the next two goals to allow SU to regain the lead, 6-4., with 6:13 to go. Less than a minute later, Markowitz buried the puck into the cage to pull YU to within a goal. With just over three minutes remaining in regulation, Markowitz connected with Bordan, who shot the puck into the net for the game-tying tally. That completed the hat trick for Montreal native. Regulation ended with the game even at six goals apiece. Sudden-victory overtime was needed to determine which team would earn a berth in the Elite Eight.
Yeshiva drew a power play, 3:38 into the first overtime period, but could not convert. However, Matt Conway committed his second consecutive penalty, this time for unsportsmanlike conduct, shortly after his first one expired. Yeshiva took advantage of the opportunity as
Matthew Carl tipped in a rebound to send Yeshiva to the Elite Eight, the program's third straight appearance in the national quarterfinal.
Yeshiva's magical run ended with a loss to Endicott College. The Gulls went on to win the National Championship.
It was a successful season for Yeshiva. The Maccabees will look to build on it during the 2019-20 season. The puck drops again in October. Â
