Softball Earns Two Wins Over York (N.Y.)

BELLROSE, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University softball team earned a pair of non-conference wins over York College (N.Y.), at Padavan-Preller Field, on Tuesday afternoon. The scores were 10-0 and 16-7. The Maccabees advance to 3-23, while the Cardinals drop to 0-13.

Senior pitcher Samantha Cohen earned the victory in game one, pitching a complete-game shutout, and striking out five York batters in the process. Sophomore pitcher Chana Boltax earned her first collegiate victory in the circle, in game two.

"The girls have been working really hard on their defense in practice, and it has shown the past couple of games," Yeshiva University head coach Danielle DeStaso said. "It is nice to see their hard work paying off this week with a couple of wins!"

The first two innings of the opening contest were dominated by the pitchers, as Cohen and freshman pitcher Rosenery Chicaiza kept the game scoreless through two innings.

In the top of the third, senior catcher Sarah Hiller stepped up to the plate, with runners on the corners and nobody out. She took advantage of her opportunity by lining a single to center field to score two runs and give YU the lead. Sophomore shortstop Miriam Kazlow was up next and picked up an RBI via a groundout to extend the Macs' lead to three runs.

After Cohen tossed another scoreless frame in the bottom of the third, Yeshiva continued the momentum with three more runs in the fourth. Senior right fielder Leah Feder opened the scoring by driving in Boltax from third with a two-out single. The next batter was senior center fielder Sarah Elspas, who drove in two runs with an infield single to increase YU's lead to 6-0.

In the home half of the fourth, the Cardinals loaded the bases with one out. Cohen maintained her composure and got freshman left fielder Nicolasa Restituyo to hit into a double play, as sophomore third baseman Chana Weinberg caught the popup in foul territory, and then threw freshman first baseman Ashley Alcantara out, as she tried to go back to third.

In the top of the fifth, Yeshiva broke the game open with four more runs. With runners on second and third, and nobody out, junior shortstop Basya Goldstein singled to center to score Weinberg. Later in the inning, the Maccabees loaded the bases with two outs. Junior first baseman Gabi Chutter delivered with a two-run single up the middle to put Yeshiva up, 9-0. Kazlow then crossed home plate on a wild pitch for Yeshiva's 10th and final run of the game.

In the home half of the fifth, sophomore right fielder Shamonie Miller singled with one out. Cohen was able to get freshman second baseman Valentina Pozo to line the ball to Chutter, who stepped on the bag to get Miller out, and clinch the victory for the Maccabees.

For the game, Goldstein went 3-for-4 with a run scored and three stolen bases. Boltax scored three runs, stole just as many bases, and singled. Hiller scored three runs, and walked twice, while Chutter went 2-for-3 with a double. Elspas produced two singles, while Weinberg walked twice and stole just as many bases. Cohen singled, scored two times, and earned a base on balls.

For York, Chicaiza pitched a complete-game, but took the loss.

In game two, Yeshiva scored 12 runs in the opening inning to take a commanding lead, and never looked back. Hiller drove in the first run on a single with the bases loaded. Chutter was up next and lined a triple to center, clearing the bases, and putting YU up by four runs. Chutter added an RBI single before the inning was over. Feder and Boltax also produced a run-scoring single during the frame.

After the Cardinals scored a run in the first, Hiller's RBI single highlighted a two-run second for the Macs to extend the visiting team's lead to 14-1.

York got back into the game by scoring six runs in the bottom frame, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Restituyo, to narrow YU's lead to 14-7.

Yeshiva scored two runs in the fourth, on its way to a 16-7 victory, and a sweep.

For the game, Chutter went 3-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored. Hiller went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and just as many runs batted in. Feder drove in three runs, scored once, and walked twice. Sophomore first baseman Yael Itskowitz had an RBI and scored a run, while Goldstein scored three times, and walked just as many times. Weinberg and sophomore second baseman Malky Perlberger each singled and scored a run. Kazlow produced two hits, drove in a pair of runs, scored three times, walked, and stole a base. Boltax went 2-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored, and a walk.

In the circle, Boltax pitched a complete-game and struck out four batters to earn her first collegiate victory. Chicaiza was once again credited with the loss. Junior pitcher Dorianny Rosas pitched 4.2 innings in relief.

Yeshiva will take a break, and then host Baruch College on the campus of Fordham University, on Monday, April 29. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
