Goldstein Sets Program Single-Season Record for Hits as Softball Wins Game Two Over Baruch

BRONX, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University softball team earned a split of its non-conference doubleheader against Baruch College, at Bahoshy Field, on Monday evening. The Bearcats (6-16) won the opening game, 9-1, while the Maccabees (4-24) were victorious in game two, 12-7.

Junior left fielder Basya Goldstein made history in the opening game, as her single up the middle in the fifth inning of game one was her 28th hit of the season, which sets a program single-season record. Goldstein broke her own record, as the Teaneck resident produced 27 hits during the 2018 season.

"Basya is a player that works really hard," Yeshiva University head coach Danielle DeStaso said. "She always talks about going to the batting cages with her dad before the games, and this shows in her performance."

The Bearcats struck early in game one, scoring three runs in the opening frame. The highlight was a two-run single off the bat of sophomore catcher Danielle Petrunti, with the bases loaded and nobody out, to open the scoring. Baruch added three more runs in the third, as second-year third baseman Jooyoung Park and freshman left fielder Daniela Lopez produced back-to-back RBI singles. Park scored the Bearcats' sixth run on a throwing error.

With Yeshiva down, 7-0, in the home half of the fifth, Goldstein led it off with her milestone hit. After stealing second, she would eventually come around to score thanks to an RBI single off the bat of sophomore first baseman Yael Itskowitz, to put Yeshiva on the board.

It would not be enough, as Baruch scored two more runs in the sixth, on its way to a 9-1 win.

For the Bearcats, sophomore pitcher Victoria Kisling earned a complete-game victory, giving up just one run and striking out nine YU batters in six innings pitched. Freshman first baseman Kaitlyn Rivera added an RBI double during the contest. Senior center fielder Gabrielle Huezo and Petrunti each went 3-for-4 with three runs scored.

For the Maccabees, senior pitcher Samantha Cohen pitched a complete-game, striking out seven Bearcats in the process, but took the loss. At the plate, Itskowitz went 2-for-3, while Goldstein stole a pair of bases. Sophomore second baseman Chana Boltax singled, walked, and stole second. Sophomore shortstop Miriam Kazlow and senior center fielder Sarah Elspas each generated a one-base hit, with the former successfully stealing second.

Yeshiva got off to a strong start in game two, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. Goldstein led off the frame by doubling down the left field line, and then went to third on a fielding error. She eventually scored on an RBI single up the middle, courtesy of Boltax. Later in the frame, with runners on second and third, one out, junior third baseman Gabi Chutter slapped a single up the middle to score Boltax, to extend YU's lead to 2-0. Kazlow eventually scored on a passed ball to cap off YU's run production in the first.

Baruch scored four runs in the top of the third to jump out to a 5-4 lead. With one run already in, freshman shortstop Darine Mata drew a walk with the bases loaded to pull the Bearcats to within one. Next up was Lopez, who lined a single to center to score two runs to catapult Baruch to a 5-4 lead.

Yeshiva got one run back in the bottom of the third, thanks to an RBI double off the bat of Itskowitz, that allowed Chutter to score from first, to tie the game at five runs apiece.

After Cohen held the Bearcats scoreless in the fourth, Yeshiva tacked on two runs in the bottom frame to retake the lead. The highlight of Yeshiva's productive inning was an RBI single from Boltax.

Yeshiva extended its lead in the bottom of the fifth, thanks to an RBI double off the bat of sophomore right fielder Chana Weinberg.

Cohen returned to the circle to retire Baruch's lineup without giving up a run for the third straight inning. Yeshiva broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth, by scoring four runs to take a commanding 12-5 hold. Kazlow, Weinberg, and Elspas each produced an RBI single during YU's big inning.

Baruch scored two runs in the seventh, but it was not enough as Yeshiva was able to hang on for its fourth victory of the season.

For the Maccabees, Cohen earned the complete-game victory, giving up just two earned runs in the process.

Yeshiva's lineup produced 15 hits and stole eight bases in game two.

Boltax went 3-for-4 at the plate, scoring two runs, producing two RBI, and stealing just as many bases. Chutter, Itskowitz, and Kazlow each went 2-for-4 with a stolen base. Chutter scored two runs and drove in just as many. Itskowitz crossed home plate twice. Weinberg produced two hits in three at-bats, with two runs scored, two RBI, and a stolen base. Elspas went 2-for-4, while senior catcher Sarah Hiller singled, scored a run, and stole a base. Goldstein scored two runs, walked, and stole second.

"The girls worked really hard to come back from the first game and win the second," DeStaso said. "It is not always easy to come off a loss by continuing to have a positive attitude and win like they did."

Kisling pitched her second complete-game of the evening, but this time she was credited with the loss.

Yeshiva will conclude the 2019 season on Friday, with a doubleheader against the College of New Rochelle, at Flowers Park. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
