Softball Drops Two Skyline Games to Purchase College

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University softball team dropped both ends of its Skyline Conference doubleheader to Purchase College, 19-2 and 15-4, at Gil Hodges Field on Friday afternoon. The Panthers advance to 7-11 overall and 4-4 in Skyline play, while the Maccabees drop to 1-17 for the season and 0-10 in conference contests.

The Panthers scored in each of the five innings during the opening game, including a nine-run fifth. Purchase also scored five runs back in the third to put the game out of reach for Yeshiva.

The Maccabees scored a pair of runs in the fourth, thanks to an RBI double off the bat of sophomore second baseman Chana Boltax and a run-scoring single by first-year shortstop Miriam Kazlow. The runs were scored by junior left fielder Basya Goldstein and Boltax.

For the Panthers, senior second baseman Victoria Capone-Froio went 3-for-4 with three runs batted in, including an RBI triple, and scored three times. Second-year first baseman Cassidy Montes and sophomore pitcher Kelly Agostini each went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI. The former scored four runs and hit two doubles. Senior center fielder Kelly Hayes produced four hits in five at-bats, including three RBI and just as many runs scored. In the circle, Agostini struck out four batters to earn the complete-game victory.

For Yeshiva, Goldstein, sophomore first baseman Yael Itskowitz, and second-year designated play Malky Perlberger each reached base with a single. Senior catcher Sarah Hiller earned a base on balls. Third-year pitcher Samantha Cohen pitched a complete-game but took the loss.

In game two, Capone-Froio's RBI triple highlighted a four-run second inning to put the Panthers up by a score of 4-0. The Maccabees countered with four runs in the bottom frame to tie it. Sophomore right fielder Noa Applebaum doubled down the left field line to drive in second-year third baseman Chana Weinberg. With runners on second and third, two outs and two runs in, Hiller slapped a single up the middle to score Boltax and Goldstein to even the game at four runs apiece.

In the top of the third, freshman catcher Mae Testa Feliciano was hit by a pitch. She stole second and then stole third. Feliciano ended up scoring on an RBI groundout from freshman left fielder Danielle Morelli to put Purchase back in front, 5-4. After the Panthers added another run in the top of the fourth, the visiting team's lineup would break through with 11 runs in the fifth to put the game out of reach for Yeshiva. Senior right fielder Daniella Edelson drove in two runs on a double to left center field that capped off the scoring for the Panthers. Yeshiva would fall in the second game by the score of 15-4.

Agostini once again earned the win in the circle, giving up just one earned run in three innings pitched. Montes did not allow a run or a hit, and struck out four batters, to earn the two-inning save. Capone-Froio had another big game at the plate, going 3-for-3 with three RBI and just as many runs scored while drawing a walk.

For Yeshiva, Cohen pitched another complete-game, and fanned three batters, but was once again on the losing end. Goldstein produced a single, while Hiller walked twice. Kazlow and Weinberg each walked with the latter also reaching base with a single. Senior center fielder Leah Feder slapped a one-base hit, while Applebaum crossed home plate once.

Yeshiva will continue Skyline play on Sunday, hosting Sarah Lawrence College for a pair of games on Randall's Island, beginning at 3:00 p.m.
