NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University softball team dropped both ends of its Skyline Conference doubleheader to Sarah Lawrence College, by scores of 5-1 and 20-4, on Randall's Island Field 23 on Sunday afternoon. The Gryphons advance to 12-11 overall and 3-5 in league play, while the Maccabees drop to 1-19 for the season and 0-12 in the conference.
In the opening inning of game one, junior left fielder
Basya Goldstein led it off with a triple to right field and ended up scoring on a passed ball to put YU up, 1-0. Sarah Lawrence answered in the top of the second, as sophomore designated player Alexa Zartman-Ball and senior third baseman Mikayla Cunningham produced a run-scoring single to give the visiting team a one-run lead.
Senior starting pitcher
Samantha Cohen and junior Karissa McAurley each settled in, holding their respective opposing lineups scoreless in the third, fourth, and fifth innings. Yeshiva's best chance was in the bottom of the fourth, as the Maccabees had runners on first and second with two outs. However, sophomore designated player
Malky Perlberger grounded the ball to short and sophomore third baseman
Chana Weinberg was thrown out trying to advance to third.
Sarah Lawrence broke through in the sixth, as another RBI single off the bat of Cunningham extended Sarah Lawrence's lead to 3-1. In the top of the seventh, first-year left fielder Bailey Nguyen and senior catcher Baylie Petit each delivered with back-to-back RBI singles to put YU in a 5-1 hole.
That's all McAurley would need as she retired Yeshiva in order in the bottom of the seventh to clinch game one for Sarah Lawrence. She threw a complete-game victory, giving up no earned runs, a pair of hits, and striking out six YU batters. Cohen also pitched a complete-game, fanning three opposing hitters to take the loss.
For Yeshiva, senior center fielder
Leah Feder produced a hit and walked. For Sarah Lawrence, Cunningham went 3-for-3.
In game two, Yeshiva trailed 2-0 before getting up to bat. However, the Maccabees scored three runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead. Goldstein once again led off the first inning with a hit, this time a single, and then stole second. She scored on a single through the right side by sophomore shortstop
Miriam Kazlow to slice YU's deficit in half. Thanks to a single from sophomore first baseman
Yael Itskowitz, and Feder drawing a walk, Perlberger came up with the bases loaded. She slapped a single to left center to score Kazlow and Itskowitz to give Yeshiva a 3-2 lead.
However, Sarah Lawrence countered with five runs in the second, and nine in the third, to blow the game open and put it out of reach for Yeshiva. The big blow was a two-run double off the bats of both first-year center fielder Zoe Kim and freshman shortstop Hannah Akin in the third inning. Sarah Lawrence went on to win the second game, 20-4.
For the Maccabees, Kazlow went 3-for-3, with two runs scored, while Itskowitz produced two singles in three at-bats. Perlberger drove in three runs, while Cohen reached base with a single. In the circle, sophomore pitcher
Chana Boltax pitched a complete-game but took the loss.
For the Gryphons, sophomore pitcher Delaney Parker earned a complete-game victory in the circle, striking out five YU hitters. Akin went 3-for-4 with three RBI and just as many runs scored.
Yeshiva will host Baruch College, in a non-conference doubleheader at Bahoshy Field, on Tuesday evening. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
