Baseball Drops Two Games to Mount Saint Mary

PALISADES PARK, N.J. – The Yeshiva University baseball team dropped both games in its Skyline Conference doubleheader to Mount Saint Mary College, by scores of 17-0 and 11-4, at Palisades Park on Sunday afternoon. The Knights advance to 10-11 overall, and 4-6 in Skyline play, while the Maccabees drop to 2-19 for the season, and 0-14 in league play.

In game one, the Knights scored four runs in the first, and two in the second, on their way to a convincing conference win. The big blow came off the bat of sophomore catcher Robert Brust, as he launched a two-run double during the Knights' six-run sixth inning. Sophomore outfielder Justin Maldonado produced a two-run single, as well as an RBI single, during the opening contest.

On the mound, senior pitcher Christian Spano threw five shutout innings, and struck out four YU batters, to earn the win. Juniors Robert Worden and Andrew Connors each pitched a scoreless inning with two strikeouts out of the bullpen.

For Yeshiva, second-year shortstop Zachary Baly, junior second baseman Alex Malech, freshman third baseman David Kreisberg, junior catcher Max Goldstein, and sophomore catcher SJ Tannenbaum each reached base with a single. Junior center fielder David Hanelin drew a walk. On the mound, sophomore pitcher Rafi Jacobs gave up three earned runs in five innings to take the loss.

In game two, senior third baseman Tom Huvane drilled a two-run double in the top of the first to put Mount Saint Mary up, 2-0. After the Knights scored in the second, senior pitcher Mordechai Cohen settled in and tossed shutout frames in the third and fourth.

Down 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth, sophomore second baseman Leib Fant, first-year right fielder Daniel Fischoff, and sophomore third baseman Moshe Stuart each drew a walk to load the bases, with one out. Baly came up to the plate and lined the ball to right. The right fielder dove for it but missed and the ball went behind him, all the way to the wall. That cleared the bases as Baly reached third for a three-run triple and a new game, at 3-3. Two batters later, senior left fielder Aryeh Salovey singled through the right side to score Baly and give the Maccabees a 4-3 lead.

The Knights' lineup awakened in the fifth, scoring seven runs in the frame to regain the lead for good. Freshman shortstop Devin Tait's RBI single tied the contest, and then scored the eventual game-winning run off a single by junior first baseman Matt Barbieri.

Yeshiva only managed two hits for the remainder of the game and Mount Saint Mary went on to earn the sweep.

For the game, Baly went 3-for-4. Hanelin reached base with a single and stole second. Salovey stole two bases, while Kreisberg added another single. Cohen reached base with a walk. Fischoff reached safely with a single. On the mound, Cohen went five innings to take the loss. Kreisberg pitched two innings in relief.

For Mount Saint Mary, sophomore pitcher Michael DiGiovanni got the win out of the bullpen, striking out five YU batters in 3.2 innings pitched. Freshman pitcher Matthew Borriello started the game, tossing 3.1 innings and giving up four runs for the no-decision.

It was senior day as graduating seniors Jacob Finkelstein, Shmuel Silverstein, Joseph Goffstein, Cohen, and Salovey were honored with a ceremony prior to the first game.

The Maccabees will battle the Lightning of Lehman College on Wednesday, in a non-conference doubleheader on the South Field, beginning at 4:00 p.m.
