Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Benhamu's Tally Lifts Men's Soccer to Victory Over York (N.Y.)

TEANECK, N.J. – The Yeshiva University men's soccer team once again earned a one-goal victory, this time defeating York College (N.Y.) in its home opener by a score of 2-1, at Votee Park on Sunday afternoon. The Maccabees begin the year 2-0.

Junior forward Alberto Benhamu netted the game-winning goal in the 71st minute to break the scoreless tie.

"Today we really had to be patient until we got our goal," Yeshiva University head coach J.J. Davidson said. "It wasn't easy, but the boys kept working until we got the breakthrough. Once we had the lead, the team gave everything to protect it."

The two teams each produced 11 shots during the opening half but could not find the back of the net.

Yeshiva had plenty of chances to take the lead in the second stanza. Benhamu drew a foul inside the opposing team's box, during the 63rd minute, and was awarded a penalty kick. However, he shot the ball over the net and the game remained scoreless.

The Macs kept attacking in York's zone and finally broke through in the 71st minute. Junior forward Zachary Stauber fed the ball to Benhamu, who shot the ball into the upper 90 of the net to give YU the lead, 1-0, with less than 20 minutes remaining in regulation time.

Yeshiva's defense shut York down in the late stages of the match. The Cardinals were held to just one shot in the remaining 25 minutes of regulation.

The Maccabees went on to win the hard-fought match, 1-0, to stay undefeated to start the year.

For the afternoon, Yeshiva outshot York, 27-16.

In goal, junior goalkeeper Sagi Badash stopped all 10 shots he faced for the shutout victory, while his counterpart Jasper McLeod saved 12 out of 13 shots he faced.

Yeshiva will hit the road to take on New Jersey City University, at Robert L. McNulty Field, on Friday afternoon. The action begins at 12:00 p.m.
