JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Yeshiva University men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the year, dropping a non-conference match to New Jersey City University by a score of 5-0, at Robert L. McNulty Field on Friday afternoon. The Gothic Knights remain undefeated at 4-0-0, while the Maccabees drop to 2-1-0.
NJCU scored four of its five goals during the final 45 minutes of the contest. The home team had a balanced attack, as five different players found the back of the net.
Yeshiva got off to a quick start, producing three of the first four shots of the match, but NJCU took over and outshot YU, 29-5, the rest of the way.
Despite the Gothic Knights spending the majority of their time in the Macs' defensive zone, YU was able to prevent the opposition from scoring, until the final 1:02 of the opening half when junior defender Nelson Segovia positioned himself in the center of the box and headed the ball into the net off a free kick by senior back Ron Jones. That put YU in a 1-0 hole.
The home team added four more tallies in the second half to earn the non-conference victory and remain unbeaten.
For Yeshiva, freshman goalkeeper
Nicolas Dlugach made seven saves in his collegiate debut. Junior netminder
Sagi Badash played over eight minutes during the late stages of the opening period and turned aside a pair of shots.
For NJCU, junior goalkeeper Aldahir Cazun stopped all four shots he faced to earn the shutout victory.
Yeshiva will open Skyline play on Wednesday, against Mount Saint Mary College, at Kaplan Field. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
