Women's Volleyball Rallies But Falls to Purchase College

NEW YORK – The Yeshiva University women's volleyball team suffered a hard-fought Skyline loss to Purchase College, in straight sets, at the ARC Arena on Tuesday evening. Set scores were 25-11, 25-22, and 25-17.

After the Panthers (3-0, 1-0 Skyline) earned a convincing win in the first set, the visiting team built a 22-10 advantage in the second. The Maccabees (0-5, 0-1 Skyline) would not go down without a fight, as the Blue and White went on a 12-2 run to narrow Purchase's lead to 24-22. During Yeshiva's rally, junior outside hitter Rebekah Bargraser and sophomore outside hitter Maya Rosen each slammed home two kills and produced a service ace. The Panthers recovered and scored the 25th point to win the second game and put Yeshiva on the brink.

In the third stanza, a kill by Bargraser, and a service ace from senior middle blocker Batya Schreier, highlighted a 3-0 Macs' run to put the home team up, 10-8. Later in the set, Purchase went on a 7-1 run to build a 22-15 advantage. After each team exchanged a point, Bargraser produced a successful attack to pull YU to within six, at 23-17. However, the Panthers scored the final two points to clinch the set and the match.

For the Maccabees, senior middle blocker Tehilla Teigman had five kills, 10 digs, two assists, and an ace. Schreier tallied 12 assists, eight digs, and two aces, while Bargraser added four kills, seven digs, and three service aces. Junior right side hitter Julie Chase had a pair of assists, and just as many digs, while classmate Brooke Ratner contributed on defense with two digs of her own.

The Maccabees will battle the Bears of St. Joseph's College Brooklyn, in a conference match at the Hill Center, on Thursday. First serve is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
