BROOKLYN - The Yeshiva University women's tennis team opened the 2019-20 season by earning a non-conference victory over Brooklyn College, 7-2, on the Roosevelt Courts on Tuesday evening.
The Maccabees won two out of three doubles flights, and then went 5-1 in singles competition, on their way to the season-opening victory.
"It's always good to start the season on a high note," Yeshiva University head coach
Danielle Carr said. "This team has been putting in a lot of hard work with both drills and fitness. The focus has been on executing well in matches and staying in the points. They did that well tonight."
Junior
Leora Moskowitz earned convincing victories in both the third doubles position and at No. 3 singles, winning every game in both matches. Senior
Alexa Hymowitz teamed with Moskowitz during the Macs' victory in the third doubles flight, and then came back to win every game at the sixth singles position.
First-year player
Deborah Frewa had a successful collegiate debut. First, she dominated at No. 2 doubles with junior
Alexandra Huberfeld, 8-1. Then, she earned a tight victory at No. 4 singles. The Caracas native split the first two sets (6-3, 4-6), and then won the tiebreaker, 10-7. Huberfeld won all 12 games in her two-set victory at the fifth singles position.
Senior
Shana Adler claimed the second singles flight, 6-0, 6-0.
"They were all fight and no quit," Carr said. "This match was also a great confidence booster for our first conference match against Purchase, this Friday. We know what we need to work on these next two days to be our best selves."
Friday's match at Purchase College will start at 11:00 a.m.
