Men's Volleyball Drops Both Contests at Skyline Tri-Match

MAHWAH, N.J. – The Yeshiva University men's volleyball team dropped both matches in the Skyline Conference tri-match, on the campus of Ramapo College, on Sunday afternoon. The Maccabees fell to the Panthers of Purchase College, 3-1, while falling to the host Roadrunners in straight sets.

In the match against Purchase (3-7, 1-1 Skyline) set scores were 25-10, 27-25, 21-25, and 25-19. After dropping the first set, Yeshiva (2-7, 1-2 Skyline) trailed 22-19 in the second stanza. The Maccabees would not go down without a fight, as a kill by junior opposite hitter Derek Orenshein sparked a 4-0 run to propel the Macs to a 23-22 advantage. After each team scored a point, Yeshiva earned a set-point opportunity at 24-23. However, the Panthers scored two of the next three points to win the game and go up 2-0 in the match.

In the third frame, Yeshiva went on an 8-0 run to take a commanding 19-12 lead. Orenshein slammed home three kills during the Macs' rally. The Panthers went on a run to shrink the Maccabees' advantage to three on a few occasions, but Yeshiva ended up scoring the 25th point to win the set and pull to within 2-1. Purchase never trailed in the fourth set, as a 5-0 run in the late stages of the stanza put Yeshiva in too deep of a hole to climb out of, as YU fell in the game and the match.

For the contest, Orenshein had a double-double with 13 kills and just as many digs. Graduate libero Sibi Selvarajaha also anchored the defense with 13 digs, while sophomore setter Benjamin Goldstein also had a double-double with 20 assists and 12 digs. Senior middle blocker Yosef Ajami added five kills, four blocks, and eight digs. Junior setter Shimon Ohana added eight digs of his own, while classmate Jonathan Apsan tallied a pair of kills and six digs.

In the match against Ramapo (11-7, 4-0 Skyline), set scores were 25-8, 25-12, and 25-12. Ajami had a team-high three kills, while Orenshein scored two service aces and led the way defensively with five digs.

It will be a quick turnaround as Yeshiva will travel to Patchogue, N.Y. on Monday to take on the defending Skyline Conference Champions, St. Joseph's College Long Island. First serve at the Danzi Center is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
