Men's Soccer Moves Into Playoff Position With Key Skyline Win at Maritime College

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University men's soccer team earned a gutsy hard-fought Skyline victory over Maritime College, 2-1, at Reinhart Field on Tuesday evening. With the win, the Maccabees are now tied with the Privateers for the sixth and final league playoff spot with nine points. YU currently holds the tiebreaker over Maritime due to Tuesday's head-to-head victory.

It marks the first time in program history that Yeshiva (3-5, 3-4 Skyline) has won a road game over Maritime (6-7, 3-6).

"The team tonight created history by beating Maritime at their field," Yeshiva University Head Coach J.J. Davidson said. "We have a packed schedule, so we needed every player to step in and no one let us down. I am so proud of the resilience we showed tonight!"

Yeshiva struck first in 29th minute as sophomore midfielder Alejandro Saul took a feed from classmate Naor Dahan and rifled the ball into the net for his first collegiate goal. Dahan was credited with his third assist of the season. Both teams went into the half with YU securing a 1-0 advantage.

The Maccabees padded their lead less than 10 minutes into the second period as rookie forward David Abittan found the back of the net for his first goal as a Maccabee and giving his team a two-goal cushion.

The Privateers got one back in the 64th minute as senior midfielder Thomas Kropp tallied his third goal of the season, slicing YU's lead in half with 26:12 left to play in regulation time.

Yeshiva's defense shut down the opposition the rest of the way. The Privateers had a chance to tie the match, with 3:15 left to play, but senior defender Larry Castello's shot was denied by senior goalkeeper Sagi Badash. Maritime would not get another scoring opportunity thanks to Yeshiva's strong defense as the Macs were able to secure their third conference victory of the season, 2-1.

For the evening, Yeshiva outshot Maritime, 15-9. Each team took three corner kicks.

In net, Badash made four saves to earn the win for the Maccabees. Senior Tim Nichols stopped six shots for the Privateers.

Yeshiva continues its quest for a spot in the Skyline Championships on Thursday evening, by hosting St. Joseph's College Brooklyn, at Votee Park. The conference match is scheduled to begin at 8:00 p.m.
