Men's Soccer Edged by Farmingdale State College

TEANECK, N.J. - The Yeshiva University men's soccer team suffered a hard-fought Skyline loss to Farmingdale State College, 2-1, at Votee Park on Sunday afternoon. The Maccabees (4-6-0, 4-5-0 Skyline) remain one win away from clinching a spot in the Skyline Conference Championships.

The match-winning goal for Farmingdale State College (9-5-1, 7-2-1 Skyline) occurred on a successful penalty kick by senior midfielder Carlos Rivera during the 77th minute.

The Rams dominated the early stages of the contest by attacking the net and putting pressure on YU's defense. Senior goalkeeper Sagi Badash made three saves for the Maccabees during the first 26:26 of the contest. However, Farmingdale finally found the back of the net when senior defender Anthony Machado received a feed from classmate Alex Castano and provided the tally from inside the box to put YU in a 1-0 hole during the 27th minute.

The visiting team had more chances to extend the lead but Badash prevented a pair of shots from going in. Yeshiva would respond to the opposition's attack as junior forward Ethan Fettaya intercepted a pass, sprinted down the field, and beat the opposing goalkeeper on a breakaway to tie the match at one goal apiece with less than five minutes remaining in the half. Fettaya now has six goals this season. The Maccabees had plenty of chances to take the lead during the period's final minute, with a corner kick and a pair of shots, but could not put the ball in. Senior defender Marc Ziarno headed the ball towards the cage but was denied by sophomore goalkeeper Justin Silva. Yeshiva and Farmingdale went into the intermission tied, 1-1.

The two teams exchanged chances to grab the lead throughout the second period but YU's foul, inside the box, with 13:03 remaining in regulation time gave Farmingdale the best opportunity to go back in front. Rivera took advantage by successfully converting on a penalty kick to put Yeshiva in its second deficit of the match.

Off the kickoff, sophomore forward Lucas Baredes sprinted down the field and got a shot off but Silva was able to jump up and make the save. Farmingdale did not allow Yeshiva another opportunity as the Maccabees ended up on the short end of the 2-1 final score.

For the afternoon, the Rams had the heavy advantage in shots, 27-13, and had a slight edge in corner kicks, 6-4.

In net, Badash made 12 saves to keep the Maccabees in the match. Silva turned aside six shots to earn the victory.

Yeshiva will look to clinch a conference playoff berth on Tuesday when the Macs take on the Gryphons of Sarah Lawrence College. The Skyline contest at Fleming Field is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
