Fettaya's Big Match Leads Men's Soccer to Skyline Road Victory Over SUNY Old Westbury

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University men's soccer team earned its first Skyline victory of the season, hanging on to defeat SUNY Old Westbury by a score of 2-1, at the Farmingdale State Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon. Junior forward Ethan Fettaya netted the official match-winning goal during the 16th minute and had an assist on YU's first tally.

"I was extremely happy to score today but more importantly, I am happy for the three points for the team," Fettaya said. "Everyone on the pitch worked extremely hard to keep the victory intact and without them, the win would not be possible."

The Maccabees (1-2, 1-1 Skyline) struck first during the 10th minute, as sophomore forward Josh Ziarno received the pass from Fettaya and propelled the ball from 25 yards out that bounced over the opposing goalkeeper and into the net to give the Blue and White a 1-0 advantage. It was the first goal of Ziarno's collegiate soccer career.

Yeshiva struck again, just over six minutes later, as Fettaya went around a pair of Old Westbury (2-7, 0-4 Skyline) defenders and rifled the ball past the Panthers' netminder and into the back of the cage to extend Yeshiva's lead to two goals.

The Maccabees' defense shut down the Panthers throughout the opening period, just giving up four shots during the first 45 minutes of the contest. YU took a 2-0 hold into the break.

The Panthers earned a penalty kick opportunity just over two minutes into the second half. First-year player Nicholas Puelinckx took advantage by guiding the ball into the net to slice Yeshivas lead in half, at 2-1.

The Maccabees' defense came up big from that point on, blocking three consecutive Old Westbury shot attempts during the 82nd minute.

With less than two minutes remaining in regulation time, the Panthers had one more chance, but sophomore forward Randy Parada's shot sailed high. The Maccabees would not allow another scoring chance by the opposing team the rest of the way and went on to earn the hard-fought Skyline road victory, 2-1.

"It was a great win under difficult circumstances," Yeshiva University Head Coach J.J. Davidson said. "I'm so proud of the guys for giving everything they had so we come back with all three points."

During the afternoon, Yeshiva had a narrow edge in shots, 14-12, and doubled Old Westbury in the shots on target category (8-4). The Panthers held a slight advantage in corner kicks, 3-2.

Senior goalkeeper Sagi Badash made three saves to earn the victory in net for YU, while Old Westbury senior netminder James Perciballi made six saves in defeat.

Yeshiva will host Manhattanville College, at Votee Park, on Thursday evening. The Skyline showdown is scheduled to begin at 8:00 p.m.
