TEANECK, N.J. – The Yeshiva University men's soccer team suffered a hard-fought Skyline Conference loss to Manhattanville College, 3-1, at Votee Park on Thursday evening.
The Valiants (5-4-2, 4-0-1 Skyline) built an early 2-0 advantage on goals from freshman midfielder Demba Cham in the 37
th minute and junior forward Eli Pardo during the 40
th minute. That would be the score after 45 minutes of play. Manhattanville dominated play in the opening half by outshooting Yeshiva, 13-3.
The Maccabees (1-3-0, 1-2-0 Skyline) showed signs of life in the second half by getting more shots off. Yeshiva was finally able to cash in as junior midfielder
Jess Rom connected a pass to classmate
Ethan Fettaya who ripped the ball into the net from the edge of the box to pull the home team to within one (2-1) with 26:42 remaining in regulation time.
YU had a golden opportunity to tie the match in 65
th minute, as Rom sprinted by the goalkeeper who came out of the net, but Rom's shot was blocked by a Manhattanville defender just before it went into the net.
The Valiants put a stop to the Maccabees' momentum in the 70
th minute as junior midfielder George Simpson tipped the ball into the back of the cage off a corner kick to give the visiting team its second two-goal cushion of the evening. Junior midfielder Michael Mezzina was credited with the assist.
The final score ended up being 3-1 in favor of Manhattanville.
After struggling in the first half, Yeshiva tied the opposition in shots, 12-12, during the final 45 minutes of the match. The Valiants had the advantage in corner kicks for the evening, 8-2.
Senior goalkeeper
Sagi Badash made eight saves in net for the Blue and White. Sophomore goalkeeper Luis Granados turned aside four shots to earn the win in net for Manhattanville. Senior midfielders Kendall Davis and Cody Lacava had assists during the match for the Valiants.
Yeshiva will take on Mount Saint Mary College, at Kaplan Field, on Sunday afternoon. The Skyline contest is scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m.
