Women's Volleyball Has Strong Effort in Loss to York College (N.Y.)

JAMAICA, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University women's volleyball team suffered a non-conference loss to York College (N.Y.), in straight sets, at York College Gymnasium on Thursday evening. Set scores were 25-11, 25-21, and 25-13.

Leading the way for the Maccabees was Shira Sredni who tallied three kills, seven digs, and a block. Zoey Botnick also anchored the defense with seven digs, while recording six assists and a kill. Her twin sister, Ashley Botnick, had a team-high nine digs to go along with a kill, an ace, and two assists. Aleesa Elbaum produced seven digs, slammed home a kill, scored a service ace, and executed an assist. It was deuces wild for Hannah Aaron who had a pair of kills, service aces, blocks, and digs. Tali Miller added two kills and just as many digs, while Suzanne Wallach chipped in with a dig.

In the opening set, back-to-back kills by Ashley Botnick and Sredni gave the Maccabees a 6-5 advantage. The Cardinals countered with a 14-1 run to take a commanding lead and never looked back.

In the second stanza, Sredni and Aaron highlighted YU's 4-1 run by scoring a kill each to propel the Blue and White to the lead, 10-9. After York jumped back in front, Aaron executed another successful attack to tie the set at 11 points each. However, the Cardinals once again countered with a big rally, this time by scoring eight unanswered points, to put YU in a deep hole. The Maccabees would not go down without a fight as a service ace by Ashley Botnick and a kill from Miller catapulted Yeshiva to a 6-1 run to shrink York's lead to 20-17. The Cardinals answered by scoring four of the next five points to put YU on the brink for the second set. Three attack errors by the opposing team kept Yeshiva alive but York was able to score the 25th point to go up 2-0 in the match.

The Cardinals did not trail at any point in the third game and went on to earn the non-conference victory. They were led by Kiara Gonzalez who had a match-high 11 digs, slammed home four kills, scored four service aces, and registered a pair of assists. Emily Cabrera had five kills, just as many digs, three serves aces, a block, and an assist.

Yeshiva will host The City College of New York, at the Max Stern Athletic Center, on Sunday afternoon. First serve is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
