PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University men's volleyball team dropped both matches in its Skyline Conference doubleheader against St. Joseph's College Long Island, at the Danzi Center, on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Eagles (3-0, 3-0 Skyline) won all six sets played.
In the opening match, set scores were 25-6, 25-8, and 25-8. After dropping the first two sets, Yeshiva (0-5, 0-5 Skyline) got off to a good start in the third game as a kill by junior middle blocker
Alon Jakubowitz gave his team a 3-1 lead. After the Golden Eagles tied it up, they committed a series of errors that gave the Maccabees the advantage at 6-3. St. Joseph's once again rallied to tie, but the Macs were able to jump back out in front by a score of 7-6. For the third time in the set, the Golden Eagles scored three unanswered points, this time to take a 9-7 lead. Yeshiva was able to pull to within one, but then the wheels fell off as St. Joseph's finished with a 16-0 run to win the game, 25-8, and the match, 3-0.
For the Maccabees, Jakubowitz led the attack with four kills. Graduate setter
Sibi Selvarajah anchored the defense with five digs, while junior outside hitter
Benjamin Smillie added three digs of his own. Junior libero
Michael Stark had four assists and three digs.
In the second match, set scores were 25-8, 25-8, and 25-10. Yeshiva had the lead in the early stages of both the first and third sets, but the Golden Eagles responded twice with big rallies to put each game out of reach for the Maccabees. St. Joseph's led from wire-to-wire in the second set, on its way to remaining undefeated to start the season.
For YU, Jakubowitz and junior middle blocker
Ariel Rivkin each added a pair of kills. Stark tallied six assists, two digs, and a kill. Selvarajah had another solid match defensively with four digs. Junior middle blocker
Steven Zelmanovich added a kill and a pair of digs of his own.
Yeshiva will take on Sarah Lawrence College, in a Skyline contest at the Campbell Sports Center, on Thursday evening. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
