Baseball Drops Both Ends of Skyline Doubleheader to Manhattanville College

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University baseball team suffered a pair of Skyline losses to Manhattanville College (12-1 and 13-1), at the Manhattanville Baseball Field, on Friday afternoon.

In the opening game, the Valiants (7-7, 6-6 Skyline) scored three runs over the course of the first two innings to put Yeshiva (0-6, 0-5 Skyline) in an early hole. The Maccabees loaded the bases in the top of the third and sophomore shortstop Ari Rosenberg was able to score on a fielding error in the infield to pull the Blue and White to within two runs. However, senior pitcher Luke Shaffer was able to escape the jam without giving up more runs. Manhattanville scored seven runs in the bottom frame to put the game out of reach for Yeshiva.

Rosenberg led the charge for YU as he went 3-for-4, including a double. Senior designated hitter Zachary Baly had a single and a pair of walks. In his season debut, senior centerfielder David Hanelin reached base twice via walks and picked up a stolen base. Junior left fielder Joey Kalish also worked a walk.

Shaffer earned his third victory of the season on the mound for the Valiants, striking out 11 YU batters in five innings pitched.

In the second game, the Maccabees held the Valiants scoreless for the first two innings. YU had multiple opportunities to jump out in front during that stretch, including runners on the corners in the top of the third, but could not capitalize. Manhattanville made Yeshiva pay by scoring three runs in the bottom of the third, and four more in the fourth, to take a commanding lead.

With YU down, 13-0, in the top of the seventh, junior first baseman David Kreisberg came up with runners on the corners and two outs. He continued his great play this year by poking a single through the right side, driving in Rosenberg, to put Yeshiva on the board. 13-1 ended up being the final score.

For Yeshiva, Baly singled and walked, while Rosenberg and Hanelin each stole a pair of bases and earned a walk. Junior catcher Ari Eizen drew a walk in his only plate appearance. Junior second baseman Judah Blonder, Kalish, sophomore right fielder Eliyahu Solomon, and first-year third baseman Charles Bendheim each reached base with a single. Kreisberg and Blonder also worked a walk.

On the mound, senior pitcher Rafi Jacobs started the game and struck out four batters in four innings for the Maccabees. Sophomore pitcher Sean Demo earned the win out of the bullpen for the Valiants.

These two teams will play each other in another doubleheader on Sunday afternoon, at the Manhattanville Baseball Field, beginning at 11:00 a.m.
